Do I need to set up steriliser and prep machine before baby gets here.

I don’t know how to use either of these. I’m guessing they’re pretty easy but should I have a practise making bottles up before hand or is it a waste? I’m 37 weeks now so could be any time and I didn’t want to be stood messing with a crying baby waiting for feeds etc. what did everyone else do?

You may not use it for a couple of weeks after the baby is here because the smallest amount will be too much , sorry can’t remember what oz it is but let’s say it’s makes a minimum 5oz your baby might only be drinking 3oz so we didn’t use it until they were on that amount of milk, we used up our ready feeds and made the bottles manually , so you’ll have some time when baby is here to get used to it, but honestly it’s super easy! Prep machine is literally just 2 buttons xx

Worth familiarising yourself with both and seeing how they work but I wouldn't for example put the filter in the prep machine yet until you're home with baby. Mine is set up in my kitchen and I've descaled it and tested that it's meeting temperature for the hot shot but I won't be putting the filter in until I've had baby. I used it with my first so I took it out of storage.

We're using ready made formula with the teats as babies have such little amounts in the first few days/weeks So not worth the faff of the prep machine and sterilising (bottles only stay sterile for 24hrs anyway). But may be worth having a play with the prep machine so when you do make one you know what you're doing xx

@Phoebe could I not make a 5oz bottle and just let them drink 3oz? Xx

Would highly recommend if not bf using ready feeds for as long as possible. If you go straight to powder they get constipated so quick. But I’d still set them up and learn how they work. Get prep machine ready with filter and have it cleaned. I never used my prep machine till around 6 months as it made him really colicky xx

@Nicole does the filter come with the prep machine tommee tipee? Or do I need to buy this separate? Xx

@Charlotte do you just give the ready made formula bottles at room temp? Xx

Yeah filter and a small bottle comes with it brand new. I've had mine awhile so I now buy my replacement filters on Amazon subscription

I'm sure i did on my first, and I'm sure the hospital did too, some babies hate the colder temp but my first wasn't fussy, just hungry :) make sure you get the ones with the teats in the box (£8 for 6 I think) as they're tiny and newborn friendly. We monitored how much she was having and then when she was on 3oz we made the switch to prep machine formula and didn't look back. You can also buy large cartons of ready made formula that you just pour in to a bottle which can also be easier. Prep machines normally come with a filter but you can get them literally everywhere xx

Oh yeh of course 😊 we just didn’t to preserve formula haha x

@Nicole how often are you supposed to change the filter? Xx

Roughly every 3 months but can be sooner depending on how much you use it
