Metformin

Hi everyone, So I’m currently taking Metformin 1x a day as I have gestational diabetes (currently 26 weeks), and my midwife has advised me to take 2x after breakfast and 1x after dinner, I feel slightly nervous doing that, has anyone been in this position?

Oh wow once a day! When I was pregnant with gestational diabetes, they told me to take 1 tablet breakfast and one for dinner. Later they increased 2 tablets for breakfast and dinner which makes it 4 for a day. I know it’s so worrying! Please be strong. I was very depressed during my pregnancy because of them. Make sure you follow a diet! It really helped me a lot.

@Yana Hey Yana, so far it’s been once a day but I’ve been told to have it 3x a day now, but because I get cramps from it I feel worried if it gets worse. How was your pregnancy taking them? I feel worried if anything will happen to my baby.

@Afsana I didn’t experience any cramps when I was taking it. And also I can’t advice or say anything much, because I was diagnosed at 14 weeks and I didn’t start taking it immediately because I was questioning the whole diagnosis because they just took blood sample for Hba1c and it was slightly high, I was asking for glucose tolerance test and they refused. I started taking Metformin around 17-18 weeks, I was able to control sugar levels and they were still not satisfied. The nurse told me to start taking insulin before bedtime (my fasting sugar was slightly high) which I told her I will think about it and let her know. They were pressuring me so much and calling me almost everyday to start taking insulin. I agreed with them that If my fasting is not improving by 28 weeks then I’ll take it. I also went to GP for advice, he told me it’s not that dangerous (at that point I didn’t know who to believe). And at 28+5 I gave birth prematurely. 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽

Until now nobody knows what caused premature birth. On documents it’s says “spontaneous”. Baby girl was born healthy, sugar levels were fine from day 1. I don’t know if it’s metformin that caused it but I definitely suspect stress. Because I went into labour 10 hours after a hospital appointment in diabetic clinic. And the baby was not stressed, no infection or anything. She was already in the position to be born and I came to the hospital 5 cm open. What I’d recommend, just to be on a safe side, seek for second opinion from another doctor/nurse.

@Yana Thank you for your advise, I have been stressed through this pregnancy as I’ve experienced loss before and worried to take any form of mediciation even though they say it’s for the betterment of blood sugar. But I’ve asked to speak to another midwife. Thank you for your advice, I hope your little one is doing well :)

@Afsana it’s not easy, I know! I wish you all the best❤️
