Maternity pay confusion

Hey guys. For background I’m based in England. So I worked for a agency while doing a training graduate program for a year (June 2023-June 2024) and then was meant to start my PhD which would of gave me a full time position within the NHS but due to pregnancy complications I had to defer for a year. The ward I was meant to work on gave me a different position until I was able to continue with my studies but when my pregnancy complications worsened I was gave a sick note with a review every 3 months. Now I am 4 months pregnant, but even though I am technically employed I haven’t worked anymore than 6 shifts before being placed off work. Does anyone know how my maternity pay would work? My ward manager said I don’t qualify for maternity pay, so I looked into stat but i haven’t worked enough hours for that either so what would I apply for? I have an condition that lowers my white blood cell count and the medication they offer during pregnancy for it I am allergic to so working in a hospital while pregnant is next to impossible without serious risks or I would consider working up the hours as much as I can to qualify. It’s all confusing so any advice would help 😂 Thank you!

I’m having a similar issue as well!! I work in an agency that doesnt offer maternity pay and I can’t work due to my pregnancy being a safety risk so I have had resulted to being on universal credit to help me with my financial needs. If you go on the gov website you can see what financial support that the government can provide for you hope that helps x

Are you able to speak with your manager or HR and be switched into a role more suitable for you at this time so that you can work the 8 weeks before baby and then get SMP? You can ask for a reasonable adjustment, but that may only be suitable if you could work in some capacity at all right now, like in admin until the baby is due. If they can't vary your role at all and/or you must stay off sick then you won'tbe entitled to any SMP like you say. I'd speak with your midwife to see what they recommend but also query disability benefits in line with your illness right now. You have Dr's notes to support a claim. I hope you can get something sorted. X

@Rhiannon that’s a great idea. Thanks love xx
