NHS mat leave

Hi all, Was just wondering if it’s possible to take 11 months maternity leave if working for the NHS? I only ever hear of people taking 9 or 12 months so didn’t know if this was a rule or was something to do with payroll? Thank you! 💙

You can take whatever you want. I took 10 months.

You can take whatever you want up to 12 months. Lots of people stop at 9 months as that's usually when you stop getting money so the last 3 months are unpaid.

You can, I was asked how long I wanted to take😊

Thank you girls xx

I’ve taken 9 months and some annual leave tagged onto the end! Altogether it makes up around 10 and a bit months xx

Depending on your trust it’s likely as the last 3 months are unpaid - mine was 8 weeks full pay 16 weeks half pay and now 12 or so weeks SMP and then last 12 are unpaid - they usually assume you’ll take the full year and you have to give a months notice as to when you’re returning. I plan on ending mat leave in December and adding my leave on so last 6 weeks will be paid so i’ll have had 11 or so months off x

@Hannah does your trust not offer equal average paid spread out over However long you want So technically you can do 12 months and still be paid for the last 3 months

yes they do - my payroll wasn’t very helpful when I asked but it is an option too 😅

@Hannah fair enough I took it out over 10 months so most of my may leave is just under what I would normally get paid so can’t complain too much

I took 10 months with my first (extended by a month after everything unlocked during covid) How long you take is up to you. You are also able to spread your OMP over the total time you take off so you get some pay every month even after SMP stops
