On holiday with a toddler - not going well…

So you see all these pics of family holidays with a toddler and all smiles, great captions but honestly it feels like a good half of it has been shit. My toddler is new to walking and is sleeping badly - which is new for us. I’m also pregnant again and very worried how I’m going to cope. It’s just us and no grandparents but please tell me I’m not the only one having a difficult time with a toddler whilst away? Some of it has been nice but a lot really hard work.

Not just you! I went away in March, 2 months after my daughter’s 2nd bday and right after she’d just gotten over chicken pox. She was wide awake the whole plane journey there, was shattered the whole holiday despite taking naps she didn’t have at home, refused to walk anywhere just wanted to be carried, was super clingy, found this new weird obsession with having to take everything off the floors and put them on the sofa or beds (even bulky things like her travel cot) and would get super distressed if that couldn’t happen, she barely ate, she was sick one night. Then when we got home she refused to sleep in her own cot, but also refused to sleep in the travel cot she uses once every week at her grandma’s, full on screaming and crying every night to be out. It was hell. We ended up having to do a quick babyproofing of her room and converting her cot into a toddler bed so she could have a duvet and take her toys in and that seemed to work. It was a rough few weeks getting back to normal

Thanks Leanne for sharing! That sounds rough and this is my worry that we’re already creating bad habits for when we come back! And this sounds similar to us - lack of sleep and being wide awake too! Thank you for sharing and making me feel like I’m not alone as don’t have the picture perfect holiday!

We've been totally put off holidays, tbh. We have a four year old and a 1 year old. While the 4 year old would probably be fine now, he's previously been horrendous and we're expecting his little brother to be the same. We'll take them on nice holidays when they're a bit older.

Thank you Caroline I think that’s were we will go with things too unfortunately!

Christ no, it’s not just you. Remember, people only post good time pictures on social media which isn’t a reflection of the truth. I had three boys in 3 years and it was often hell on wheels but it does get easier. You are not alone x

Thank you Lucy! You know when you feel we must be getting something wrong …!
