When do babies eat out of one hand?

I'm trying to find a way to word it so that google will understand me but I'm not finding anything, when do kids usually start to be able to eat thing out of one hand with the other? And by that I mean something like I hand my kid a handful of cheerios, he takes the handful in his palm, and uses the other hand to pick individual cheerios up to eat them one at a time? Right now he only seems to want to grab as many as he can at once, then gnaw on his hand until a few fall into his mouth lol. He's 10 months old rn, when should I expect him to start being able to use one hand as a bowl?

I think that’s a pretty long ways off. Their hands are so tiny for so long. I’m trying to think about whether my almost 3 year old does this and I don’t think he does - although I don’t want to say he truly can’t, he just doesn’t. All of his other eating skills and fine motor skills are on track or advanced. Being able to pass things from one hand to the other is a 9 month milestone but that’s not really what you’re asking.

@GMF yeah he's been able to pass things from hand to hand since he was like 6 months old, and he's a really big kid, in 2T clothes at the point, and his hand is definitely big enough to hold a couple dozen cheerios. That being said he's definitely still working on his fine motor skills so it could be a while yeah lol

My son ate with a Spoon and fork from 8 months. He rarely even used his hands for grabbing foo. At 4-6 months he used his pincher grasp. Is that what you are asking?

@Christina🤱🏼🍂☕️♈️ no, asking about them using two hands together, one hand to hold multiple items, the other to then pincer grasp individual pieces to their mouths

You could try encouraging this by using a snack cup so they have to reach in and grab a piece or two at a time! You could also try some fine motor skills activities Pinterest is a great resource!

@Tagmayne is that necessary? I’m confused 🤔

That doesn’t happen until after 1. Probably more like 15 months. Let baby self feed to practice but there’s no rush. They’ll get there

@Stephanie yeah he does self feed almost exclusively. He's very much a "no me" baby, wants to hold his bottle, eat his food himself, etc

@Christina🤱🏼🍂☕️♈️ I'm not like worried about it or anything I was just curious. And I mean if an adult couldn't do it I'd be a bit concerned for them probably, I just have no clue when that might start is all lol

@Laurel yeah he has snack cups etc though we mostly use them when we're out and about since he's less likely to dump that lol. He's got pretty great fine motor skills for his age, he's a pro pea hunter lol. And I'm not worried about it or anything, was just curious when mamas with older kids may have noticed their kids being able to do that that's all

My almost 14 months old started doing this with 2-max 3 items. They have to be small though, he managed with 3 cheesy puffs.

@Tagmayne gotcha. I’ve never noticed my child doing it and I certainly don’t hold things in my hands when I’m eating. My baby used utensils since he was 8 months old so that’s why I was trying to understand what you were asking. Thank you!
