Weaning

So my baby is 4 and a half months old will be 5 months on the 29th and he’s a very hungry baby and is getting very chunky , he drinks 8oz every 2 n a half hours and i’m wondering if i should start introducing solids , im really nervous about it because he can’t sit up by himself yet , has good head control but not complete control and im worried he’s not ready yet. I’ve been recommended rusks but i know they have a lot of sugar and stuff in them so im really not sure , some advice please😭

The advice for weaning at 4 months is still that they should be able to sit up by themselves and have good head control

@anon what about putting a wee bit rusks in their bottle ?

Never put anything in a bottle it can be a choking hazard x

Was just going to say NHS advice is don’t put anything in baby bottle. If you’re really not sure, it might not be quite the right time yet? There’s no rush to wean as milk is still the main source of nutrition until 1 😊 x

I wouldn’t worry about him getting chunky at this point if he’s following his curve on the percentile chart still , do you weigh him still ? When he gets more active through play and eventually crawling etc he’ll probably drop a bit of the chunk ☺️

@Suzannah It's definitely an old style version of weaning but not recommended at all. Baby rice is somewhat recommended but only if absolutely necessary. There are studies showing early weaning being linked with gut disorders and also some looking into molars coming through before feeding grains due to the lack of enzymes being produced that can even break down the grains. It's best that you do your own research into things and speak to your health visitor etc about it so you can make your own informed decisions. As above, milk is the main source of nutrition Food before one is only for fun (as well as developing a palate and learning how to control food)

Thankyou guys ! Is hungry baby milk an option or does it make no difference? He’s in size 4 almost 5 nappies already and hardly fits in 3-6 month clothes , iknow chunky means healthy but peiple keep telling me he shouldn’t be this big , i don’t really care tbh i live chunky baby’s aslong as he’s happy and healthy that’s what matters to me

My baby’s 5 months on the 18th I introduced solid foods about a week ago he’s in 6-9 clothing! I started on rusk for a few days to see how he’ll take it first and introduced Ella’s kitchen liquid baby food a few days ago! Like yours my baby would drink every 2-2 and a half hours and drinks 7oz every feed. I started by doing 1 meal as a solid so for his 2nd to last bottle of the night he’ll have his bottle then some solid food as baby’s need their milk for growth still! There’s no harm in trying it hope this helps x

My sons 23 weeks I introduced purées at 4 months. He’s over 19lb and in 9-12 month clothing and size 4 nappies. He’s having homemade food at lunchtime everyday x

All babies are different hun try not to stress too much about it. I think you’ll know when they are ready. My girls been on liquid pouches for 3/4 weeks only has half a pouch a day but it’s really helped she’s 23 weeks old chunky and proud lol I did speak to the gp who told me the signs of a hungry baby and was happy for me to try pouches or liquidised foods. actually finger food/solids like toast/fruit snacks ect is still recommended at 6 months as they struggle to break them down and digest them :)

Mine is 5 months and I’ve been giving purées and breakfast cereal. Baby loves it and tbh he’s already grabbing the spoon to try and feed himself and I did the same with my first child no issues. Many people start early as every baby is different. Hasn’t changed milk intake and tbh he can have a little taste of some purées if you think he’s ready. You know best ❤️ Never gave mine rusks but for teething I did cucumbers sticks that he could bite when he got a little bigger.

The advice is around 6 months so some baby’s will be ready before that, some after, you decide if you think he’s ready. They also don’t have to be able to sit completely unaided. As long as they can sit safely when strapped into a high chair without being slumped over then that’s fine. With regards to foods when I start I’m just going to puree veg myself to begin with, I’ll avoid pre made stuff just to keep it healthy and save me constantly checking ingredients

Have you tried hungry baby formula?

@Laura not yet i wasn’t sure if it would actually make a difference or not
