Solids

So my daughter is gonna be a year on Halloween and she’s started refusing purées and eating them less and less. I think she’s ready for solids but I’m absolutely terrified of something going wrong and her choking. How did yall do with transitioning to solids? Any advice helps because my anxiety is driving me crazy.

Just cook things enough where they are either soft or in small bites. But the earlier you start the better it’ll be for them so if definitely start now. It’ll teach them how to not choke and how to eat properly

@Gabrielle I was planning on making baked chicken and white rice tonight. She should be okay to eat that right?

Start with really soft stuff like mashed potatoes and soft pasta noodles! We get the spiral noodles and he loves them with Marinara. I would also keep some sort of liquid near by for him to drink to help him wash it down if he was having trouble! Remember that gagging and some throwing up is okay! It’s their way to get a feel out of how much they should put in their mouth! Good luck! ❤️

Check out the Solid Starts app!! They show you how to prepare the food and offer videos of babies eating each food so you can feel confident when introducing something new. It really helps me

We started with soft foods like egg, tofu, avocado, mashed potatoes, etc, and in small bites

Yeah. My daughter loves chicken and rice. You totally could do that. Just cut the chicken into tiny pieces and I like to smush them slightly so they aren’t think incase she accidentally swallows it without chewing

Thank you everyone!! I’ve already been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder so I freak out over every little thing. Especially her fake little coughing fits she does to get my attention. Your advice is amazing because solids scare the hell out of me and I just don’t wanna hold her back with eating🙁

We never did purees ad my baby wasn’t into them. I don’t think I would do chicken as a first food, but you could work up to it. My baby has only had rice a few times and it is hard on her still because they are tiny pieces that kind of stick in her mouth. Things I would do: Pooled potatoes without skin Bite size salmon (it breaks apart easier than chicken) Ground meats (they break apart easier) Banana Cooked carrot Cooked pear Avocado

Follow Solid starts on instagram. They have videos of what to expect and show you real babies working through food and gagging. Definitely helped my anxiety and allowed me to help my baby learn solids.
