Mental health breakdown

Hi ladies, So I’m currently 21 weeks pregnant and I’m starting to feel overwhelmed with my emotions and feelings. I’ve previously suffered with quite bad anxiety and depression and taken antidepressants for it but stopped back earlier this year. I now feel that I need to be on them again to cope, is anyone else currently on antidepressants while pregnant? I feel really alone right now with this 😔

Awww bless you. I’m on sertraline have been for a few years and well before I was pregnant. They are my lifeline, I literally cope with day to day life so much better being on them. There is small risks with taking them but my midwife says the benefits of staying on them far out weigh the risk, and I lost my Dad a few weeks ago too, and although the grief is still unbearable as it’s such a huge loss I am grateful for my little tablet each evening. Definitely speak to your midwife and or GP. Don’t just bottle this up as it will only get worse. Sending lots of love and hope you get sorted xx

The NHS Talking Therapies service tends to prioritise anyone who is pregnant. Not sure if counselling/therapy would help but maybe worth exploring, if that’s an option for you x

Hiya. I suffer with chronic anxiety and intrusive thoughts that are worse during pregnancy and my midwife referred me to a Perinatal mental health midwife and honestly they are AMAZING, they will talk you through what meds you can take and give you appointments whenever you need them go have a chat and unpack how you feel, this has helped take the edge off for me x

Thank you so much for this advice I will take it on board and I’ve got an appointment for the talking therapies but I like the sound of the perinatal mental health midwife.

Hi Zoe, I hope you're OK. Sorry to hear you're struggling. Definitely let your midwife know how you are feeling and in the meantime is there anything that helps you to feel a bit more able to cope with the day? For me swimming and knitting help me massively to calm anxiety and also deal with the day better. I know though that it can be hard to get motivated to do those things when your mood is significantly low

Hi Zoe, I’ve just been started on Escitalopram by the Perinatal mental health team. Strongly suggest asking your midwife to refer you to them as I’ve found them so helpful. I have just found emotional regulation a real problem since being pregnant and feeling quite low, not usually on an any antidepressants but was on stimulants for adhd prior to pregnancy. I’ve had an awful time and been off sick from work for months not coping well with physical symptoms either. Xx
