Morning sugars, is it actually possible?

Was diagnosed with GD at 15 weeks, went up to the max dose of metformin quite quickly then started on insulin. I had huge feelings of failure, especially going on insulin, but I'm mostly over it now, the writing was always on the wall. My issue is that for 12 weeks of trying EVERYTHING I've never managed to have my morning sugars in range 😭 not one single time. Still titrating up and doing everything possible but losing hope and feeling disappointed each morning. Has anyone actually managed?!

Did you have symptoms at 15 weeks? We’re not tested until like 25/26 weeks I think if we’re getting tested! Sorry I can’t help, I’ve got my glucose test in a few weeks, didn’t have it with my 1st pregnancy but really thirsty this time around so idk…

@Megan I had really debilitating symptoms that were textbook of GD and a really really strong family history. Anyone who has had it in a previous pregnancy should have been tested early so I'm hoping there's some others 🤞

@Adele fingers crossed there’s more people to help you ! Try not to be too hard on yourself, I don’t know much about it but the fact you’re trying is enough. Maybe speak with midwife/GP if it’s not manageable rn xx

How high are your fasting levels? I was diagnosed at 24 weeks, just got insulin yesterday. The threshold levels are ridiculously low for GD in comparison to type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Remember it’s not your fault, especially with having a family history. If you’re doing everything possible and they’re still high, then all you can really do it let the diabetic team know and they can adjust your insulin. It is really hard and frustrating, I know. But it’s not like you’re doing anything wrong. I do think GD generally gets progressively worse and it’s not uncommon to have to increase the meds. Sorry I’m not much help but I feel your pain

Agree with @Laura's about the thresholds being so low for GD compared to the normal diabetic levels. I got a bit angry when I had it with my first as they said I should always aim for it to be below 5 in the mornings (obviously the limits 5.3 but they said below 5 was the goal to me🙄) and I said its all well and good having low numbers but legally you're not really meant to drive if it's below 5👀 I got diagnosed about 13 weeks this time around because they rushed me to get one because of how bad mine was last time and the fact my son came out huge. I don't really have any advice for it, fasting numbers generally do creep up over time and there's not a lot that can be done except medication. My fasting numbers are starting to creep up but I'm determined to stay off metformin this time around for as long as possibly so I mainly just eat veg and protein, I haven't touched carbs or sugar in months😭 100% feel your pain, at least we're over the halfway mark now❤️❤️

I had norovirus, still gave my insulin and they were still 6.2 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣 obviously didn't have my metformin but I hadn't had a bite to eat all day! They're always still between 6-7, and I'm still titrating up every day 🤦🏼‍♀️ I start feeling ill at 5.3 in the day time so I'm partly apprehensive about actually getting them that low in a morning as I'd have to eat the second I wake up which isn't ideal with a toddler to get ready 🤦🏼‍♀️ it's just rubbish aiming and failing each day!

@Adele ah bless you, you are doing a great job! Honestly blood sugars between 6-7 are completely normal and healthy at any other time. It’s just really strict with GD. Try not to stress and fixate on it, it sounds like you’re doing everything you can ❤️

@Adele it's hard with fasting numbers because it's literally just your body at that point, what you eat has little to no impact. If you're doing what you're supposed to be doing then you are literally doing your best and thats all that matters. Don't let it get you down, pregnancy, especially when you've already got a toddler, is hard enough as it is. As long as you're keeping in contact with your diabetic team they'll try to help you as best they can❤️

I got diagnosed at 12 weeks and now on metformin and insulin. Contact the diabetics team they should help you formulate a plan to make your fasting sugars low.

@Bee have you managed to get them down low enough? Honestly my placenta just hates me 🤣 I titrate up by a unit each night which is all they've said to do and it's just like constantly chasing my tail!

@Adele, worried about this sucks. I’m with you 🤗 What have you tried to manage this? What has helped my friends, my sister and I avoid being diagnosed with GD was one or more of the following: 1. No snacks or soda after 7 pm. 2. 10 min walk after dinner. 3. Have yogurt (unsweetened) with/after your dinner. 4. Include a fiber with your last meal for the day (cucumber was easiest for me). 5. Eat sugars/chocolate before lunch time (if you eat at night - yogurt, walk, or fiber) 6. Drink 2 liters of water daily. Track it if you have to. Might want to get that done by dinner so that you don’t wake up too often to go to the bathroom. 7. Eat pizza/junk food only when necessary 🤪 (I try to do that once a week tops - mainly on date night 🙂). 8. Homemade apple vinegar after last meal or after sugary snacks (I think a couple of spoons in 100ml of water). Hope this helps 🤞
