Struggling with BLW

My little girl is 8 months and has been purely spoonfed since 6 months. I've been trying to introduce some BLW into some of her meals but she always ends up gagging and then throwing up. Today I fed her her usual chunky puree and gave her a stick of banana afterwards. Anyway she gagged so much she threw up her entire meal 😞😞 Any tips on what to do in this situation?

Gagging is what you want to see. The more you offer BLW foods the more she will develop the skills needed to eat it properly

As above really, more exposure to challenging foods and textures will eventually desensitise the gag reflex. If you’ve only eaten smooth mashed stuff, even the purées with chunks, then any kind of whole foods that require anything but the suck-swallow pattern to eat are going to trigger the gag reflex initially. It won’t last, and she won’t always be sick. I’ve done BLW from the start and on occasion my boy will gag hard on particularly challenging chunks and sick up.

You can try some easy finger foods first that are harder to take big bites of or food thats easily dissolve, so things like large steamed broccoli florets, strips of toast or melty sticks/baby wafers. This will help her learn and make it less stressful. I find banana too squishy so they bite off too much

We had this with my grandson. He sicked up his first jar of food with chunks in but was fine with the next one. We give him finger snacks from Ella’s kitchen which dissolve in his mouth. We’ve given him the odd chip just to get him used to things he has to chew but he’s so greedy he stuffs the whole thing in and starts to choke. Try her with some quavers or cheesy wotsits as they’ll go mushy when she sucks on them
