Hungry baby

My baby is 5.5 months old and he's quite a big boy (99th perscentile). I started weaning him this week because he was showing all the required signs. He loved it. I'm doing pures and he's loving it, he's eating it so well. My worry is that I have not seen the drop in milk requirements - he's still drinking his normal amount if not a bit more. He had six 6oz bottles today and I usually breastfeed only at night if he wakes up. My milk supply is very low so I don't think he's getting much out of it apart from comfort. My question is - should I introduce a second meal of pure? He seems to have taken to it really well - no stomach disturbances apart from a smelly đŸ’©. I wondered if anyone is going through something similar!

He shouldn’t drop any milk at all, until 1 year old milk is baby’s main source of “food” so it’s good that he’s not dropping the milk. The idea isn’t to replace milk with food. My HV also told me it’s very normal to see an increase in percentiles when starting weaning for that exact reason x

We did 10 days of 1 puree meal and have now added a second as he's really enjoying it and means we can introduce a second flavour each day. Plan to stick at 2 meals a while now and slowly add finger foods. We are now 2 weeks in and milk level is still the same they will let you know when they are ready to reduce but they are having such small quantities of food I can't imagine this being for a while. The very rough guidelines I heard is they still need at least 600ml by 7 months and 400ml by 12 months but if course that is a guide stick with what you baby wants/ needs

@Amy I’m confused as my HV said the level of milk will reduce as you increase the food and eventually do three meals a day. I thought the whole point was to gradually reduce the milk and replace with food? Like eventually breakfast would be food rather than a drink etc. Then milk would be a top up.

@Charlotte i probably didn’t word it correctly, but the idea isn’t to replace food with milk, if they naturally drop it over time as you’ve said but @Jurate said they haven’t seen a drop. I have been told that baby’s should have at least around 21oz a day until they’re 1. I’m not a HV or a doctor but I wouldn’t imagine you should be seeing a drop this early to replace a bottle (depends how long you’ve been weaning for) đŸ„° & again, my baby is really not eating a full meal so 😂 she’d lose weight if I dropped a bottle, I guess it depends on the baby x

@Amy ah ok. Yes, I’m of the understanding the first month is just play time with food basically. So yes, still normal feeds. That makes sense. It’ll just be experimenting and making all the faces as the new tastes first x

Milk need will decrease as food increases but their tummy’s still need to get used to digesting the food so you shouldn’t just start feeding more food for the sake of it.

I really like BLW for this, I put food in front of them whenever im eating and they’re awake, they eat whatever and gradually it increases and usually they just have less milk. That’s how it worked with my son, my older daughter has basically an eating disorder so she never dropped any milk feeds but she needed the milk more

My lg is still breastfeeding the same amounts and eating 3meals a day x

All babies are different, some will drop milk quickly and want increased food and some will continue with a lot of milk and little food. My first wasn’t interested in food at all until around 8 months and then she gobbled 3 meals a day and kept most of her bottles. My second has dropped to 3 bottles a day and moved to 3 meals pretty quickly. If you think he’s showing signs of wanting more then go for it, you can always stop if he isn’t interested in a second meal x

Done a few courses and it’s milk as no1 til 1. Im confused when people say meals as i for the last 2 days have given Cucumber stick Brocolli stick (which she LOVED) Puree spinach Avo 1 slice Watermelon 1 slice These haven’t been a meal by no means (I was also told to introduce the same thing 3 days in a row but clearly that went out the window with me).

@Hayley I agree milk is the main nutrition for them until 1. I've done a couple of workshops and read a couple of books as I'm FTM and just had no idea where to start. The recommendations slightly differ - sometimes they introduce one type of veg at the time and have it for a couple of days, then add another veg, etc. Other sources recommend giving different veg every day in order to expose your baby to as many as possible - apparently helps to avoid fussy eaters. Obviously allergens have to be introduced slowly with 48-72 hours gap in-between. I decided to follow the weaning plan from the book How to wean your baby because it introduces different veg etc and it's easy to follow. My only question is really if I should introduce another meal for him, because he is enjoying the pures so much â˜ș but I guess it's the decision I'll have to make!

@Shenel thank you, I think I will just have to follow his lead. I didn't expect him to love it so much, I thought the first tastes would be more like a game. There was no playing hahaha, he just loves his food

@Jurate my confusion and I’m sure it’ll all become clear as I’m doing it and follow the babies lead. Do you hit 1 and then bottle is completely replaced by breakfast etc? I’m sure it will all naturally happen but it seems weird to suddenly drop. The plan I’m looking at 11-12 months still has two bottles a day with 3 full meals plus snacks.

@Charlotte yes, I don't really understand these specific dates for things. It's not like babies have a button at 6m or 1 yo and they suddenly are ready for things. In my opinion, you need to follow baby's lead (as long as they safe, etc) as babies develop and achieve their milestones differently. if you haven't done it I really recommend the baby academy free baby weaning class. It's so informative and free :) I think over time they will eat more food and start dropping milk, when they 1 yo you can change formula to cows milk but I think they are still having a couple of bottles/cups of milk. Anyways, I'm just going to see how it goes and do it gradually :)

@Jurate I’ll deffo look at course. Yeah it might be that you have breakfast with a cup of milk maybe. Like you said. All babies are different. I find it funny when they hit 6 months they can have tap water too. Switch 😂

@Jurate same here, I’m amazed at how he’s taken to food compared to my little girl, he doesn’t even gag on anything, just chews with his gums and swallows like he was born knowing exactly what to do 😂
