Midwife appointment

Was anyone else’s second midwife appointment completely useless? I’m so confused the midwife answered none of my questions, didn’t measure me, did not give me advice on anything, just made me aware of a bunch of bookings I have for the upcoming weeks which I had no idea of all together. Just feel like this time around it really was wasted time. What’s meant to happen on your second midwife appointment? Am I missing something from my care with the hospital I’ve chosen or is this normal that’s it’s quite anticlimactic?

Did they not test your urine or anything?

I had the doppler to hear their heartbeat at my 16 week, urine sample and went through ny 12 week appointment results, sorry yours wasn't useful! X

I had mine yesterday, she tested my urine, did my blood pressure and then went through my blood results. Spent more time travelling 😴 was a long day indeed. She did go through upcoming appointments but was all so quick I completely forgot what it all entails.

Did you get urine and blood pressure tests. those 2 should be done on every appointment. she should have also asked if you like to get vaccinations. some midwifes can administer onsite, some will book a seperate appointment as far as i know they dont measure or check babies hearth beat until 24 weeks

Mine was like this also! Didn’t even test urine just talked about blood results, up coming appointments and asked repeatedly how home life is. Only took blood pressure

They don’t measure until 24 weeks. Most trusts don’t use a doppler until after 24 weeks either because it can be hard to find and causes more stress. Other than your questions being answered, what else were you expecting?

Okay maybe it is very much meant to be like this in that case. I think I might have got myself too excited for it hahah I got my blood results even though I had received them earlier in mail anyway. For my blood pressure and urine test done and that’s it.

I had much of the same experience myself. Quick urine test, blood pressure check and chat about blood results. If I'm honest I haven't really found my midwife that helpful really. I can't help feel the same as you do, it felt like a bit of a waste of time.

I think it really depends where you are, as I got to hear the heartbeat at my 16 week appointment, also had urine, blood pressure and co2 levels checked which is done at every appointment. I was told about what vaccinations to get and when, the antenatal classes available, said my bloods were all okay, asked if I was okay physically and mentally and then booked my next appointment

Yesterday i had my second appointment and it was like yours. She listened quick the baby’s heartbeat and told me to book my whooping cough and flu vaccines and that was all. I had so many questions but she was so expeditive.

16 week app we went through my entire maternity book, bloods and urine, she explained what they tested for, blood pressure, showed me what appointments are automatically booked and what I needed to book myself and last week got to listen to babies heart beat ❤️

I had the exact same with my midwife!

This sounds very standard for 16 weeks, definitely won’t measure yet that’s for sure. They ramp up as you progress but ask questions if you’re unsure of anything 🙂

I had Doppler, BP and urine, appointments made, wellbeing check and basic questions about how I plan to birth and feed - NHS Fife, Scotland

Oh and she checked my blood results had come back fine from my first appointment

Yeah mine was similar, quick blood pressure and urine test any questions and then out the door. I know they do this day in day out but this is my first pregnancy and it would be nice for them to at least try and make it feel special

Same experience I had this morning 🙈 felt more like an appointment to book more appointments!

I must admit I am like you my appointment was useless! Didn’t go through any results, she didn’t have a computer ( my local midwife is different than my birthing hospital), she only did my blood pressure. No urine sample, no hearing babies heart beat, no measuring. And when I asked for some help she was surprised what the doctor had said prior… it was a complete waste of my time
