Formula fed babies

We are attempting breast feeding but my milk supply isn’t that great. Nelly loves her formula - she is 4 days old and seems constantly hungry- is 60ml too much for her to have? Picture of said little hungry monster

I don't know about formula at this stage, but just to say it's normal for milk to not come in properly til day 4 or so. The best way to increase supply is just put her on the boob whenever she wants, it's a supply and demand system. If you give too much formula, then your body will think you don't need to make so much milk. Honestly with my first on the worst day I literally breastfed for 8 hours 😬 It does get better. Also if you do end up combi-feeding that can be the best of both worlds, I did that with my first and plan to do it again.

I formula fed and always went by, if they keep draining the bottle then add an oz until they leave a little bit. You can’t over feed them, when they’re full they’ll stop. I do know if you want to successfully combi-feed then always offer boob first and then top up xx

@Amy my gp, health visitor and midwives all said to feed on demand and you can’t over feed them and my son would just stop drinking when he was full 🤷🏼‍♀️

Completely normal for breast milk not to come in for a few days after birth. In fact, it does usually take days. It's supply and demand so you need them to be demanding it from your breast for your body to know how much to produce but baby will get colostrum from your breast in the meantime which has everything they need. Until your supply catches up they can seem like they're STARVING but they're fine. Then your body catches up the days of demand on your boobs and then your milk hits full force! However, if you fill them on formula and they don't do any feeding on breast you won't get that supply and the less demand from baby, the less you produce.

We ended up back in hospital day 5 due to weight loss and jaundice. My milk took a while to come in due to blood loss during delivery. I was advised to put him on the boob whenever he was hungry, then express and then top him up with 55mls of formula. He’s 3 weeks now and still combination feeding now but he’s taking less formula now. I’d definitely recommend expressing after every feed to help your supply if you want to continue breastfeeding

.5-3oz 8-12 times per day is normal for a formula fed newborn!

Don’t worry about over feeding; you’re not suppose to be able to. But as others have said, always offer the boob first. You can try “triple feeding” which is nursing, then pumping, then bottle feeding. It’s exhausting but shouldn’t take long.

Thanks all- sorry didn’t mention in the first message - she is always breast fed first and that’s improving she just is always asking for more formula! Hahaha she’s only litttle so very keen to get weight on her. Seeing our midwife today so will also ask her. But I think we are doing ok at the mo 🤞🏼

I formula fed, think she was having about 70-90ml each feed. I breastfed before offering formula - my milk never actually came through even after a month of trying. I also pumped after every feed and it was a lot! Do what’s right for you xx
