Potty Training

We are trying to potty train our 18 month old son before our second is born in December. We’ve been trying the past month but he got sick for a whole month off and on so we stopped being strict about it. But I need advice of how to go about it. He’s gone pee pee on the potty and gets tiny chocolate for it and we cheer. When he sees me or my husband on the potty he goes “Yay!!!” And claps his hands. So he understands that, and occasionally he will poop or pee in his pull up and come to me and say “uh oh” We stopped diapers cause he can take them off and we already had a poop incident in his crib….. We have done training and regular toddler underwear under his pull ups. He likes peeing on “big boy” potty with those foam seats but isn’t a huge fan of the plastic toddler toilets we put in his playroom so we didn’t have to go across the house. Any advice is appreciated. I’ve also heard potty training little boys is harder than girls.

So when a lot of the older guides were created pushing for 18 months to potty train was the norm because kids were more than likely to be strapped into the potty for extended times (an hour or two wasn’t uncommon.) When we tried to potty train at 18 months & expressed how it wasn’t working with our ped, she said it wasn’t really realistic for such a young age for many & to try again when our LO showed signs of being ready unprompted all on their own! Does he show signs like asking to go potty? Or going longer than four or so hours without having any pee in a diaper? When we saw the signs better, our LO was closer to 30 months & we took about a week of being stark naked with a few accidents. We started with the small plastic potty & then fazed it out about a month in to only the “big girl potty.”

If you push it when they aren’t ready it will just be harder. He is very young and even tho he “gets it” doesn’t mean he is actually ready. I’d try again when he’s a bit older

Too young and he’s likely to regress when baby is born in any event xx

This is the how to part of a series on how they potty train at Montessori schools, I used it for my oldest and found it good. Since you're having a second baby, like I did, just so you know there can be regressions in potty training and behavior for the oldest and this will pass. Best of luck and stick with it, that is my best advice 🤍

Way too young, he needs to be able to tell you rather than you telling him

We aren’t forcing it or being strict about it. Right now it’s more sitting on the potty after bed or nap and before bath. Sometimes he will point at potty and we will ask if he needs to potty. We really wanted to try to have him fully potty trained before our second arrives but we also don’t want to rush it. If he doesn’t want to sit on potty we don’t make him
