Anyone else hate "splitting the bill"??

I've found that its usually said by the people who want to order expensive or they have money anyway!! I don't mind if we've basically had the same meal, but if I'm having a salad and water, and you get a steak and wine, no way I'm paying half the bill!!

It makes no sense at all to me to split 50/50… why would you not just pay for what you ordered..? That way there’s no awkwardness if the other people are racking up the bill

I fight with some of my friends to let me pay the bill. My friends from high school think I’m rich and expect me to pay for them. Other friends I’ve met, we split or pay separately.

If you're good friends then they shouldn't mind if you pay your part and they pay theirs, I believe that's fair. I'm not going to go 50/50 if I've ordered something that's £15 and theirs is £30, that isn't 50/50. It's best to clarify it before ordering the meals what works best.

I'm happy to split if we've had similar but if someone isn't drinking or had something significantly cheaper of course we pay for our own.

I think it depends! Most of the time with my partner or friends, we’ll go back & forth. We have the respect of going to places within all of our means. If there was a situation that was disproportionate, we’d probably just pay individually, but we don’t really do that 🤷🏻‍♀️

It depends on the situation. I’ll go 50/50 if there’s not much in it. Or like when we went out for a big family meal at the weekend (16 of us, including some kids), the easiest thing for us all to do was the adults split it between them, was £50 each, so we each paid for our meals and drinks (there was a lot of drinks 😅) and a bit of the kids meals. If there’s a big difference in what has been ordered then we would pay for what we actually had.

I remember being very young only had £30 cash at the time and was invited to a birthday dinner only knew the birthday girl and wasn't that close. Anyway I expected I would just be paying my part and maybe we would all cover the birthday girl. Anyway ordered VERY little so I would have enough (£13 worth). At the end they said to split it equally I was panicking, especially since I didn't know anyone. Thankfully it was around £28 so I just about scraped it 🤣had to ask my older bro to pick me up tho coz I had no bus fair 😩 But now as an adult I don't mind as much but I make sure never to put someone in that situation myself.

Your post reminds me of that episode of friends where, Monica, Ross & Chandler are all in high paid jobs. Whereas Rachel, Joey & Phoebe can barely scrape a bit of money together. They always have to go 'somewhere nice' but, tend to order the cheapest thing on the menu {what they could afford} & when they mentioned it things became awkward😅 I don't mind splitting the bill however, I refuse to pay for someone elses bottle of wine & other alcoholic beverages esp if all I've had is tap water {which is free}.

It very much depends who I’m with. . . I have some friends where we’re all fair and don’t take the piss ordering extras etc, then others that always seem to order the most expensive thing on the menu etc then suggest we split 🤷🏻‍♀️
