Student midwives

Anyone have a student midwife? If so what did you 'allow' them to do at your birth? I have a student and I'd like her to be included as much as possible but unsure what sort of things that could be!

my student unfortunately could not be there for my birth because it was the middle of the night and i got rushed for a c-section before she could get there- my birth plan detailed that i would like her involved as much as possible because i trusted her so much, she also came to my post partum appointments and gave my bub his 6 week vaccines and came to my home visits too! they can also be involved post partum as well!

My student midwife was an absolute gem. I was induced, so she was there the whole time. She broke my waters, she did the CTG monitoring. I didn’t have any internal checks or anything during labour, but she would have done them if I requested or they were needed. She didn’t *catch* the baby. But she did everything after. She did the weighs and measurements etc after our skin to skin. She basically did everything! Probably should be noted that she was in her final year and only a few months from graduating. Not sure if you get a first or second year student what they get to do.

My student is in her first year and said they could be involved as little or as much as i wanted her too and could do everything a trained midwife could do. Tbh I didn't even know what a midwife did to include it in the birth plan 😆

Omg amazing! I wouldn’t put anything specific for her then, unless it’s something you want to specify she doesn’t do! I’d just say you’re willing for the student to do as much as she’s capable and comfortable with. That’s all I said with ours!

I had one last minute on my c-section and she was amazing!!! She helped with bubs when he was being checked over, when the cord was being cut by my birth support person and was with me during recovery and helped my baby with that first breastfeed and skin to skin.

I had a student midwife and she was amazing. They can only be there for a certain amount of hours in the day so I got her to come up a few hours into labour when things started moving. She did my ctg checks, my internal checks, she delivered the baby and all the after care stuff - weight and measurements etc. she was a second year.
