Special needs

What special needs services does Barnet offer? My son’s been diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder and he’s likely to have special needs etc. Does anyone have any resources I can look into?

You have the special educational needs support service in Barnet for 0-25 year olds. Your health visitor should be able to give you info. You could call them direct and have a chat and they can go through everything with you - 02083597637 you can self refer to them as well. More info can be found on their website https://www.barnet.gov.uk/directories/directme/barnet-special-educational-needs-and-disability-information-advice-and-support

You could also go speak to your GP and see if you can speak to the social prescriber at your surgery. They should also be able to give you information on this. I’m in Herts and a social prescriber hence I knew exactly what to look at to give you info

Will the genetic disorder affect his day to day life, or physical difficulties? Have you looked up https://www.barnet.gov.uk/benefits-grants-and-financial-advice/benefits-support-and-advice/benefits-families/benefits Or https://www.barnetmencap.org.uk/ This is if your child has learning difficulties or autism. How old is your child? As mentioned, definitely call the telephone number, you will speak to a duty health visitor who will then allocate you a HV. I work along side the Hv's so if you have any questions you can message me.

My little boy is autistic and we attend a really lovely group in New Barnet on Monday’s for children with various medical and learning needs. It’s at St James’ Church on East Barnet Road at 09:30 until 11:00 every Monday during term time. The people who run it are so lovely and supportive and there is often a professional from local support services (health visitor, bels, Oakleigh School) who will visit at least once/twice a term. Barnet Local Offer is really good to look at to see what support may be available to you.

He’s only 2 months. Thanks all
