Contraception advice

Hey Mamas ! Has anyone made the decision to go back on any kind of contraception as yet ? What was your choice ? I was on the pill before pregnancy but actually stopped it due to it causing me a lot of issues and then we made the decision to have our little one Im considering going with the copper coil as it’s non hormonal but the idea that my periods could be heavier and more painful scares me Any advice from anyone in the same boat or who has had the coil ? Thank you ! ☺️

Hi, I had the mirina coil fitted 2 weeks ago. I was planning to get the copper coil even though it’s supposed to make your periods worse, because it’s non hormonal (i find the pill kills my sex drive!). But what changed my mind was the gps face when I said that - I asked, do you tend to take more of those out, and she said yes. The gp also said the amount of hormones for the mirina is much less than the pill or implant, and what was there was more centralised (?). Feel free to correct me anyone. Insertion was fine, had my smear done at the same time, and it was no more unpleasant than a thorough internal scan. Had cramps and felt like the start of a bad period for the first 2 days, and then have now had light spotting for a week now (googled and it’s normal, might settle down in a few months). Can reach and feel it and feel happy and reassured that it’s there and working. So far I’m very happy with it - works for 6 years.

Gone on the waiting list to have a mirena put in (had one when I was 17 for 5 years and no problems). You can get an even lower hormone coil but I don’t know what the criteria is for it. Might be worth asking about it if the amount of hormones is a worry. I loved my coil before! X

I choose to have the implant and got it put in 2/3 weeks pp. A midwife/nurse came out to my house to do it for me. I had the implant before and never got my period, it’s why I chose it this time aswell. Honestly it’s just the best contraceptive for me.

I’m in a similar boat , not sure what to do as I don’t really want hormonal contraception anymore as don’t want to take the combined pill and progesterone only like the implant etc have never agreed with me

@H I think instead of centralised you mean localised. The hormones are aimed only at the ovaries, and don't really enter the bloodstream like they do with the pill and implant.

I got a copper coil inserted after my c section ( I had one before my pregnancy) I’m lucky not to have any pain or heavier period so I’ll recommend it for sure

@Emmo I didn’t know this. Maybe I would now consider as previous progesterone only (mini pill and implant) did not agree with me in that I had a lot of spotting and bad acne .

@Charlii yes the Kyleena is the coil with less hormones, I had this 3 years ago but I had just as much depression on this as the pill 🙃. I pretty much just asked and they agreed, not sure there is a criteria as such. I basically told them that the pill made me depressed and asked to have the lowest form of hormonal coil (as I had bad periods so I couldn’t have the copper) but haven’t bothered with contraception since as I had to have it taken out due to weight gain, depression and awful constant period pain 😅. x

@Emmo thank youu!

Thanks so much everyone ! Definitely a lot of information to take in and consider

I’ve chosen not to go on any. I don’t want the extra hormones! We know how babies are made so we are just careful
