Newborn feeding

Looking for some advice regarding feeding. My little boy is 3 weeks on Thursday, I’ve moved from breastfeeding to expressing and giving him bottles however in the last couple days we’ve had to up the amount we’re giving him to 4oz as he wasn’t settling with less. He’s now finishing the 4oz and searching for milk around an hour after and we’re having to try distract him for another hour until he’s next due. Do I up the amount again?! Seems like a lot considering his age🤷🏼‍♀️ Also he sleeps perfectly in the day and comes alive at night any tips on how to reverse this?! Sometimes in the day we’re having to wake him for feeds!

They can't tell night and Day for several more weeks/months so not a lot you can do there I'm afraid. Are you pace feeding the bottles? What bottles and tests are you using? It's unlikely he's having 4oz at the breast in one go but not impossible. Could he also be wanting to latch for comfort?

He could be going through a growth spurt they usually are more hungry at night during those. If he hungry again n hour later just give him another bottle don't deny him if he's hungry. U can also try him with a dummy if he is just looking for suckling comfort he should start to go bk to normal in a few days to a week it's probably just due to a growth spurt it changes there feeding patterns and awake windows.

I know it seems like a lot but definitely always feed on demand. If he wants more, give more. You can't really "overfeed" a baby unless you're trying to force him after he's turned his head away / pushes the bottle away, etc. As long as he's showing hunger cues, feed. They eat a LOT at that age (and breastfed babies tend to want to eat more frequently, as it's digested quicker). The general rule in our house was always that nighttime is "quiet" time. Soft voices only, low / no lights, only change and feed when necessary. No activity or anything to indicate it might be playtime. Lots of daylight during the day, especially in the morning - it helps regulate the circadian rhythm. Baby will get the day-night thing on their own, it just takes a little time.

There’s so much to it! He’s naturally going to want to nurse a lot and go through cluster feeding whether you bottle feed or not. Naturally he needs to regulate your body and your milk. Also he could just want to nurse for comfort!! It’s totally natural and it’s only for a short time though it may seem like forever right now. Personally I preferred to just keep nursing.. it was EXHAUSTING and still is but providing that comfort is important to me. My baby nursed every single hour till like 6 weeks 🥴 but he’s finally doing two hours! It’s always going to fluctuate and change tho!! I commend you for pumping tho! And knowing what your baby is eating I’m sure is so helpful! I struggle trying to pump bc my supply is regulated to his needs and not much extra past that/: and obviously I still want to nurse so doing both hasn’t been working for me

I can relate to everything you said!! Don’t worry his circadian rhythm will kick in! But yes what the other comment said, during the day allow natural light in, more playing and going outside! Walks are always great! And at night, maybe try using a red light. Or just a dim light when changing. Try to keep baby asleep while nursing and burping. And if they wake just put them straight back to sleep!
