Playground play

I must be getting old or just not up to speed on today’s world I was at the playground with my toddler and there were about 8 children ranging from about age 5 to 10 and they were playing alone along with one another very nicely but no adults in view. The adults were in their cars in the parking lot reading or on their phones! I could never imagine leaving my child unattended like this! Is this a thing people do nowadays?

I don't! Sometimes, I can't believe the other things parents expect I do because they do..... like leave my 2yr old completely unsupervised or vaping/smoking in the same room/car with windows up as him. This is why I have a hard time hanging out with other people. This is why I have horrible anxiety about other people being in charge of my kids.

@Annie same! I literally was baffled to see so many people on their phones or in their cars while their children were alone on the playground! I don’t agree with a lot of what people do, but that’s their life, BUT it’s completely not safe to leave children unattended 😭 I still think of the girl in NJ who mysteriously disappeared from a playground 5 years ago

It's definitely not safe to leave young children unattended like that. I also bought my stepson, who is almost 14, a phone so I can pay to track his exact location. Not just because of himself, but I read an article about horrible things that happened to a kidnapped boy his age, and I need to know all my kids are safe. You obviously can't completely shield them from the world, but you sure can do your best to protect them. Paying attention is a huge part of that!

I often see parents sitting on the bench etc so a little way away but not that far!! I find it strange when parents seem so laid back and aren't paying attention so much, I've had children latch on to me and follow me about with no parents in sight! 🙈 I'm not here to play with everyone else's kids just cuz I'm the only adult in the park who's playing. But yea that sounds extreme being in their cars. I agree with everyone about the dangers and horror stories we hear it's important to watch our kids xx

Absolutely not! It takes one second for everything to go wrong. I'm not sitting in my car, I can sit on a bench a little way away to give the kids space. I've seen 2,3 year old playing by themselves with no parents in site 😐. Shocking

I have seen this many times. I also see situations where one of the “older”kids 8 or so, is left to watch a lot of toddlers. That’s crazy. It’s irresponsible. It’s also not fair to the kids who are left to parent the younger kids.

@Kim THIS! There is nothing worse when I see or hear parents telling their older kids to look after their younger ones. That's not their kid! I'd never dream to ask mine to look after my youngest at a park, I'm the mum, not her!
