Potty Training

Question for experienced moms. Just potty trained my son a week ago. I know their all different but just off of others experience. How long did it take your kiddos to be able to give enough notice to actually make it to a bathroom. At home hes great no accidents but when out we dont make it in time he tells me basically as its about to come. Getting anxiety about going anywhere

Lots of preventive bathroom visits. Before you leave anywhere. Before you sit down to eat. As soon as you arrive somewhere. It takes time. Half of it was us remembering to take him because if they are having fun they won't remember to stop to pee.

Also maybe can you try pull ups when you go out, so that you can try to get ahead of the pee, but if you don't make it, it's not a big deal?

@Jessica ive tried this but he wont pee until he really has too 😩

@Sachiko whats your experience with that? Ive heard to not use pull ups as they feel like diapers so the child will just go and set back how far they’ve come?

Can I ask how old your son is? It's only been a week. I wouldn't stress about it at this point. With my first we tried potty training too early and ended back in diapers after 3 weeks. We tried again a few months later and it worked super quickly.

@Jessica hes 3. I know its only been almost 2 weeks now so I know this is just a stage just looking for others experience. I wish the preventative bathroom visits worked. That was my original intention but he refuses and then once he has to go there’s like 30 seconds to get to the bathroom haha at home he has no accidents

It’s a slow-ish learning curve. Took us a couple months to really adjust to the change. It takes time for them to really be in tune with their body. Accidents are inevitable but I think having some accidents help them to recognize when they should be listening to the signals their body is giving them. We trained 5 months ago at 25 months and still have a couple accidents now but it’s getting less and less as we go. She hast had any since last week Wednesday. She’s able to tell me when she wants to go and wait a bit to get to the potty but sometimes she can wait too long to say or go because she’s playing or distracted. I still do prompts at home and when we’re out of if it’s been a couple hours since she’s gone. Definitely skip the pull ups, I did that at first and it’s a crutch. We only did for long drives until she was better at saying when she needed to go. Now only at night. We have a mini potty in the car for when we’re out but will still try to go to a toilet if we can.

We started my 2 year old a month ago and she almost has no more accidents. It was like most moms said, we always had to remind her to go and sometimes she’d sit and nothing came out, so we tried again every 10 min until she peed. If we were going out, she have a thin underwear on and a diaper over it so she gets used to the feeling of wet underwear. Now she can’t stand it anymore and can hold her pee for a few seconds before we make it to the bathroom.
