Weaning advice please.

First time mum here 👋 I’m curious as to why people start weaning around 4 months? My baby is coming up to 4 months and I’m not intended on weaning until he is 6 months. He’s a chunky baby 16pounds1oz. Do they show signs? Also what do people start off with? My health visitor said no porridge or rice as it’s full of sugar.

All the advice says wait until 6 months. I think some people wean early if they suffer from severe reflux as solids can help keep the milk down. Honestly, weaning is so time consuming and preparing meals is so much work for the next 18 years, why rush!? 😆

Don’t wean before 6 months, any earlier and it increases the risk of baby developing allergies. Being a higher weight has nothing to do with weaning, my boy is 17lbs 10oz and I’m not weaning before 6 months. If baby is hungry just increase feeds as much as they need.

Yeah best to start from 6 months so it's safer for them🥰. With my first I started off with all the blander foods such as vegetables, toast etc. Because if you go straight for fruits/sweeter foods they show preference to them. I did a mixture of baby led weaning and purees where I would feed him. He now eats everything you put in front of him and isn't fussy at all. I followed solid starts also on Instagram which helps with safe preparation of various foods at the different ages and stages xx

And of course there's working through the list of allergens over time to ensure your baby doesn't have allergies to any foods. There are certain things to avoid until they are over one such as honey, they can't have that until 1+. But there's loads of information on that solid starts page for you to have a nosey through. Don't let weaning be an anxious time, a lot of people worry babies are choking but they have a natural gag reflex to help them with this. I always follow this saying "loud and red, go ahead. Quiet and blue, I need help from you". So coughing and redness is totally normal when trying something new and the urge to tap them on the back is huge but try not to, because it may cause them to choke anyway when they're in the middle of working things out themselves. Hope this helps🥰🥰 xx

I started at 4 months, he’s a big baby and he was showing signs, grabbing my food, watching me eat etc. I started with first tastes of vegetables and then I will do fruit and then start combinations and dairy at 6 months, meat grains and pulses at 7 months.

Thank you for all your help

People usually wean at 4 months for a few reasons •it has been like that in the past and we're fine (the worst 1) •health reasons like reflux or allergies New research states waiting to 6 months for good reason. You know they're ready when they show signs like, able to hold head up, sitting independently, shows actual interest (not putting hands in mouth as that's just exploring their body) physically opening their mouth following food to your mouth. My firstborn grabbed the burger I was eating and put it in his mouth. When they are ready You start with purees to taste mainly bitter vegetables like broccoli, peas, carrots then you move to sweeter veg like butternut squash, or sweet potato then you start mixing 2 vegs together. They will reject certain tastes and then next time like it or vice versa. Then you start with fruits - you don't want to awaken their sweet taste buds too soon. Then you start on finger foods for BLW. My advice, ask your HV to come at 5 months to give you information on weaning

We’ve been advised to start at 4/5 months due to reflux but I would rather wait until 6 months!

@Chloe we were advised the same with our first boy but his tongue thrust reflex was still too strong and it just pushed the spoon/food back out again every time x

I will wait 6 months
