My baby fell down the stairs

I was getting my baby ready for bed tonight and I popped her on the bedroom floor and was doing the blind. When I turned round she was gone, I ran to the stairs and she was at the bottom of the stairs crying. She has never gone anywhere near the stairs before and we have stair gates and I just didn’t shut it because I just didn’t think this would happen. We’ve just got back from A&E and somehow she’s absolutely fine but I feel so bad and I can’t stop crying. I feel like such a failure as a mum. She is the most precious thing in my life and I just can’t forgive myself for letting something so horrifying happen to her. I don’t know what to do.

Ok, take a breath! You’re ok. Your baby is ok. We aren’t bad parents because accidents happen to our kids. The bad parents are the ones who don’t safeguard against accidents and don’t care when they happen. You aren’t given a rule book when you give birth. Accidents do happen. You know that you’ll never forget to shut the stair gate again. When my little boy was 20 months ish, he fell down the stairs. I was terrified. But he was fine. And your baby is fine too. Take a breath. Chalk it up to experience.

Thank you - I really needed to hear that. I’ve been up all night checking on her so I’m exhausted which probably doesn’t help logical thinking. I hope things get easier because I’m still feeling bad but you’re right that I will never leave the stair gate open again!

My daughter fell down the stairs this morning she turned 1 last month. I also feel terrible but she seems ok. Im going to monitor for the next 24 hours. Hopefully everythings ok. These accidents happen all the time.

@Nicole So glad to hear she seems ok. Let us know how she is over next 24 hours. It blows my mind that a baby can fall down a full flight of stairs and not even have a scratch 🤯. They are such resilient little things!
