Common Names

Don’t kill me but why do people name their babies the same common names we’ve always had. I mean like Jack, Sarah, John, Elizabeth, Mary, etc. Do what you want but it just seems so basic and lazy

I think it’s okay, it leaves room for the people with “unoriginal” names to stand out more! That’s what makes them unique :) we all need balance.

You never know the story behind the name I’m Sarah and I love my name because my dad choose it. my parents had planned to name me Emma but while driving my dad heard the song Sara by Fleetwood Mac for the first time and just knew it had to be my name. I even used it for the father daughter dance song at my wedding. It may seem boring to you but that doesn’t mean it’s not special to someone else

I have a very common name (which I love) and my sister has a very unique name (which she loves as does our family) Growing up I never got blank stares on the first day of school or insane mispronunciations from teachers trying to take roll for the first time. I could always find my name on keychains or t shirts. I don’t have to spell it out loud over and over on the phone for work or business calls. And let’s just say I wasn’t the one who got her name pronounced wrong over and over and over by the pastor her entire wedding ceremony in front of everyone she’d ever met. I think I’m good with common names. I’d rather my kid have a basic life than a life of embarrassment and inconvenience.

agreed , I guess it’s each to their own. My children don’t have crazy names but I know there’s not going to be 3-4 kids in the class with the same name

I like classic names.

I have a newfound liking for traditional names, having seen too many bizarre ones the last few years.

Many people say the same about the over use of “unique” names. Some are overly done and too much. Names come from meaning and even basic names have strong meanings. My sons has what you’d call a basic name but it’s a very strong and meaningful name. I didn’t name him for likes of others.

I think it’s completely personal preference, and none of my business!

Theory, not a proven fact, I wonder if people stick with names like that because they're easy to pronounce, so the child will never have to explain to someone how to say their name or how to spell their name.

I’m Stephanie lol I never hear it in the younger generation.

You can have classic traditional names without them being overused though My girls are Melissa, Aubree and Emmeline And my son is Mark All have a long standing traditional use in England but none of them have ever had anyone in their class/group have the same name. I dont like top 50 names nor do I like names that look like the parents threw scrabble tiles in a pile to pick a name lol And I also don't like "cute" names because they aren't going to be babies forever 😔

I love traditional names. I don't like made up names as I think they're harder to remember and often a pain to spell but each to their own! Traditional does not mean there will be 5 per class though! I work in a school and see lots of names! Never seen 2 Jack or Mary in the same class yet!

@Audrey yet when I was childminding I had 3 boys in my care and all were called Jackson 🤣 imagine the looks I got when I was out and about and people thought I'd named them all the same name hahaha

@Heather 🤣🤣

Depends where you live maybe but these days there might not even be one Mary or Sara or David in the whole school but there will be 5 Junipers and Islas and Finns so which are common and lazy?
