Does anyone get frustrated at breakfast time with Gestational Diabetes

I know I shouldn't complain but it's been two weeks since I started testing with GD but I'm finding the necessary dieting with GD extremely limiting especially in the morning, if I see another greek yoghurt pot I'm going to scream. In the mornings before work if I have more than about 15 minutes to have any form of breakfast I'm lucky so it's not like I can spend an hour putting together a perfectly balanced meal. I also don't have the option of having something once I'm at work because I'm straight on the till as soon as I get in. I just don't know what else to try I feel like all I've been able to do is eat the same two things everyday for the last two weeks and I am so over it. I can't tolerate bread evidently so that's completely out. I also am in the middle of moving house so my kitchen is not usable enough for prepping meals nor do I have time in the evenings at the moment with unpacking to do anything so I am just angry and frustrated and aarrgh

I am so sorry to hear that you're terrible, I was like you before and after a week, couldn't take eat the same food every morning. Overnight oats (I add grated cucumber+carrot instead of fruits to reduce sugar), avocado toast on sourdough, chickpea (would boil them the previous night)salad, boiled eggs+avocado, make a quick wrap with paneer(cottage cheese) on a wholemeal tortilla/naan,Vegan patties(made with soya+veggies) are my new recipes. These quick breakfast recipes won't take more than 10mins to prep and you can eat them easily as they have balanced nutrition+ add some fresh veggies in the morning, for boosting your metabolism. I know it's very stressful but GD shouldn't stop us from enjoying our pregnancy journey. Please see if you could ask for help from your friends and family with the meals prep or just go to a friend's home during weekend to do the batch cooking. Helplessness & frustration would eventually increase cortisol levels which will result in insulin resistance and sugar spike

I’ve had GD my entire pregnancy (was on the edge/prediabetic before) and you definitely can eat carbs! Baby needs them and your body does to make progesterone - you just need to combine them with protein and good fats rather than eat say a piece of toast or fruit on an empty stomach. I’m also absolutely starving in the morning so it’s very necessary. So you can prep big breakfast wraps the day before with egg avocado tomato bacon etc inside them, the suggestions above are all great too. I also pre cook sausages etc. If really stuck you can also grab a pack of ready boiled eggs from any supermarket or somewhere like pret and combine with a high fibre fruit or a protein bar?

@Daisy as I said I can't tolerate bread in any form tried it and had a spike every time obviously bread just doesn't like me and I'm not really in a position right now to do any meal prep

@Vinaya unfortunately I don't have that sort of support system available and my husband is equally as swamped doing the more physical aspects of the move and as I said I can't do meal prep right now

Can’t you just have oats or weetabix

@Charlotte I've been having a lot of porridge which is getting old especially as you need to pair it with other things to stop your blood sugar spiking but in terms of the Weetabix, I haven't tried cereal yet but I've read that it's the worst thing for GD. It's very frustrating when theres like two things you can eat that's ok especially when I have no time

@Holley online suggests it’s a specific oat or weetbix, muesli etc without anything added. It’s only breakfast I wouldn’t get so frustrated with it. Maybe pick up a boiled egg or something on the way to work (or the night before) with some nuts or a piece of fruit?

Iv been having cheese on toast with marmite. It's like a little morning treat lol and only takes a bit under the grill whilst sorting my child's breakfast. Cheese balances with wholemeal slice of bread. I then also have Greek yog with that 0% everything golden syrup (skinny something it's called - nothing in it but tastes good) and a handful of berries. I also got some Diablo diabetic buscuits from Amazon and crumbled one into yog the other day 👍

@Jess i wish I could have bread it would make life so much easier but I've tried every substitute going and i just can't tolerate it

https://www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/dillon-organic-original-flax-keto-bread-60061754 try this - it’s delicious with butter and doesn’t spike at all. Low carbs and full of lots of good stuff

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/bfree-high-protein-avocado-wraps-4x42g these are pretty good too and definitely won’t spike

Oh I felt this deep!! I’m exactly the same. Sick of eating protein yoghurts! I also can’t tolerate any sort of bread/bagel etc on a morning. Occasionally I can get away with one slice of wholemeal if paired with loads of scrambled egg. Haven’t tried weetabix but that sent my friend through the roof so don’t think I’ll even bother! I was recommended porridge and raspberries by the dietician,it was fine the first day then sent me high the next 2 days! My insulin is constantly getting increased to try n compensate. It’s so hard isn’t it!! Sorry I haven’t got an answer, just wanted to sympathise ❤️

@Sarah no don't apologise I wasn't actually after any fixes im just having a crappy day and wanted to vent. I'm still on diet management but the thought of another 10 weeks of this s**t is aggravating

@Holley I know chick it’s shit. I’ve been on metformin and insulin since 25/26 weeks along with very strict diet management n I’m really struggling with it. I have up to another 8 weeks 6 days which will be 40 weeks but been told I’ll be induced as protocol for being on insulin, hopefully between 37-39 weeks. At this point 37 will do me just fine 🤣

One more for easy breakfast, try high protein cereal - this is delicious and hasn’t ever spiked my blood sugar in 2 years of prediabetes and 7 months of GD https://eatsurreal.co.uk/

@Daisy thought I would give this a go this morning to see if it was something that would work for me but it spiked my blood sugar 😔 thankyou for the suggestion anyway it was worth a try

@Daisy my husband picked up some wraps to try will give it a go thanks. I have yet to find a carb I can tolerate 😔

@Holley the only time I can generally manage a carb is if I have maybe one slice of toast but loads of protein with it so I’ll have 3 scrambled eggs with it. Wholemeal toast of course. 2 slices would spike me though. Might be worth a try as we would automatically do 2 normally I guess

@Sarah I've been pairing carbs like mad but even the slightest hint of it spikes me it's really frustrating

@Holley I must admit sometimes I am ok then the next day I can spike, but my insulin has gone up a fair bit. Are you having 2 slices or 1 when you spike? 1 seems like a pathetic portion to me 😂 but when I had with plenty of eggs it was ok

@Sarah I had one tiny piece of bread in amongst various proteins. Anything with even tiny bits of cereal, rice, pasta, potatoes (which is when I gave up with carbs as a concept entirely) spikes me so much I don't know why I am so sensitive to it

Ah I’m so sorry you still spiked @Holley the carbs are so low with all of those options! It sounds like you need some additional medication which does really help and then a low carb to moderate carb diet once you have some meds. The only natural supplement I’ve found that does anything to help is inositol - https://www.amazon.com/Ovasitol-Inositol-Powder-D-Chiro-Packets/dp/B01BT92C24

@Holley are you just diet controlled at the minute? It might be that you need to be on meds. I told them I was having to practically cut carbs out altogether because any time amount was spiking me and they upped my meds to compensate because you need to be able to eat carbs for energy! They keep telling me i shouldn’t have to cut down my carbs as much as I have had to,so my meds have been upped to allow a bit more freedom food wise

@Sarah yeah I am, they didn't seem overly concerned at the appointment yesterday but given that I've not had a very good experience with the diabetic team so far their lack of caring is pretty much par for the course so far

@Holley I would point out the lack of carbs in your diet. They may just be looking at your numbers thinking oh she’s keeping them within range well, and not considering what you’re having to cut down to,to get there! That’s what happened with me! She was like oh they’re great, all sounds good. I burst out crying and said I feel like what I’m having to cut down to to get there is not sustainable for more than a few days, and she said oh no we can’t have that! Up your carbs and well up your meds to compensate!

@Sarah honestly I've spent the last two days in tears because I just felt so ignored by them and so angry and frustrated and so so tired. It's been a bad week at work as well. I feel like I have to keep proving to them im trying and all I want is to know I'm doing the best thing for my little boy but they just don't seem to care
