I had the same a few years ago. If it’s at the back NHS will only do gold but they should have offered you the opportunity to pay for a white one. I hate mine but I’ve learnt to live with it and no one ever comments on it. At the time white was £800-£1000 so I imagine it’s more now.
They do usually ask, or at least tell you. And it’s almost always amalgam and not a colour match porcelain crown especially if you don’t pay for your treatment, and/or the tooth isn’t a front one- however if it’s visible when you smile, then usually they don’t use metal. I have two, one visible which is matched to my tooth colour, and another (which is a bit visible if I do a very wide grin), got that when exempt under maternity and that’s a goldy kind of colour.
If it's in the front it should be tooth coloured. I recently had to get a crown and it was my 5th tooth and she didn't even ask just colour matched and gave me one that was tooth coloured for free with exemption.
Pretty sure they should have asked whether you wanted a white crown or not, it costs more though. I’ve never heard of a dentist doing a gold one! It’s usually silver? I would go back or call and ask x
