Solids

I know I posted about this before but what was the first foods you guys tried with your babies that wasn't a puree? I see alot of people doing egg and Avocado scrambled, or strips of egg. My 7 month old has his first tooth and I'm really feeling the pressure to change the texture more but I'm so nervous about choking.

If you havent already, definitely join some BLW (baby lead weaning) groups on facebook. Also, make sure to research the difference between gagging (totally normal and should be worked through by baby) and choking. Download Solid Starts as well. The free version provides how to serve each food by milestone/age. Also, babies do not need teeth to reach solids. My daughter didnt have a tooth until she was 11 months and we did solids from 6 months on! I fully understand being nervous. Take it slow and at your baby's pace. He is learning and may pick it up super fast or may take a little time. Both are fine. You got this 😊

Hi! We always served both finger food and purees. The very first one was avocado that’s just cut into spears. The app Solid Starts was really helpful to know how best to serve the food based on age. It’s understandable to be nervous, I still am to be honest when serving new food. But I keep telling myself that I’ve ensured that the food I prepared is soft enough for them that it’s sooo similar to mashed food too. You got this, momma!

Soft foods is what we started with. Banana, avocado, and yogurt were our first solids

avocado puree was my babe’s first.

Avacado, yoghurt, banana, apple sauce. We also did lentil based things. Teething crackers. I second blw and solid starts

we mixed it with about .5 oz of formula

Banana!

We started with avocado (unfortunately had a bad reaction-allergies) with a little breast milk. We have since tried blueberries, sweet potatoes, carrots, mangos, bananas and prunes.

We’ve been doing Spoonful One mix ins to do allergen exposure. I know allergies are considered genetic but my husband’s whole side has similar allergies so we always worried about our son. We also started purées closer to 5 months. So far he’s only had sweet potato, pumpkin and avocado.

Neither one of my babies were really fans of purée so we skipped more to baby led weaning style with a few pouches mixed in. Scrambled eggs are a great place to start. Yogurt, oatmeal where you can modify consistency, fruits like bananas and strawberries. Also get some teething biscuits, puffs, etc to help you feel more comfortable too. It will help them learn different textures and they are low stress bc they dissolve so quickly. My baby is almost 14 months and still has no teeth but he’s been eating regular food since 6 or 7 months lol. Thankfully he has always loved it! I know it’s stressful but they figure it out much quicker than you think.

We have done purées and our first non-purée was avocado. We do powdered egg whites instead with peanut powder in an allergy introduction system from Ready.Set.Foods. Also, my 6 1/2 month old has had 2 teeth for over a month and I will tell you he is not happy at all with more textured stuff. My Pediatrician suggested waiting to move out of purée til 9 months.

Hey Our LO has taken to food amazingly. We started weaning 5ish months, maybe a bit before, she still has 0 teeth but she eats everything for soft Brocoli to pork. Started off with soft, big (size of your little finger) brocoli/Carrots/cauliflower/parnsips, quarter of tomato. Bits of soft pasta, eventually went onto the meats and fish but made sure they were cooked so they could be pulled apart easily. Good luck mama

@Emma thats kinda where I was leaning. I saw a tik tok about giving resistant foods they can't bite pieces off of but they can still develop that chewing skill more.

@Julie did the scrambled eggs go ok? I worry about mine choking on the little pieces of it. Unfortunately mine hasn't been the biggest fan of bananas, cause I've been trying to gently mash them and give to him on a spoon so he could explore working through the increased texture.

@Mirella I'm a little nervous he's gonna bite off a piece of the Avocado. Now that his tooth came in he's got a good bite, he'll try and bite the spoon and realize it doesn't feel too pleasant and get upset

@Breanna 100% You'll do great, don't worry. Be confident in yourself and you'll smash it. Our girl does gag on occasion still, but we don't rush to flip her over and smack her on the back as she needs to develop her gag reflex. Cucumber was a bit hit as a starter food too. She initially chewed the soft section, not the skin, but now (even without teeth) she chomps through the skin too and takes big chunks off. She does spit it out though when she does this 😅😅

@Breanna he did good with scrambled eggs. He wasn’t as big of a fan of the strips so I ended up just scrambling them with whole milk to make them super mushy and put them on his plate and either let him grab them or pre loaded on a fork for him until he got his pincer grisp. Also I would try to watch a video on chocking verses gagging. Gagging is completely normal at that age is actually a good thing bc it prevents choking. Mine wasn’t a fan of banana early on but then I started cutting it in strips and he liked it haha go figure. It’s all trial and error. Also strips of lightly toasted bread with different spreads are good to start with too. We always did hummus or peanut butter or mashed avocado. Just cut the crust off before serving

@feedinglittles on instagram is also a great resource. Just take your time and once you get a few more solid foods under your belt, I’m sure you will feel more comfortable.

Also, those gums are much stronger than you think. Many people think you need teeth but the teeth babies first get aren’t ones they chew with anyway. Nobody chews with their front teeth 😅

@Julie ooh I like the toast idea. I worry cause my 7 month old has 0 chill when it comes to putting foods in his mouth. Like I worry about the strips of Avocado and him just trying to shove it in his mouth. He definitely seems more interested in our food than his alot of the time

@Breanna Aw yes I bet! As scary that is tho, it’s such a good thing! My first born (girl) had no interest in much food at all until after she turned a year and I swear at 4 years old she can still somehow survive off some berries and a few snacks here in there. Haha she just does not care about food and is so picky so I was so excited when the 2nd one loved it so much early on

With my oldest (10) I used store bought stuff so it was a little easier cause I didn't have to think as much about what time make and give him. My 7 mo will legit mean mug me while I'm trying to get him to try puree all while I'm eating whole solid food 🤣. But I'm really trying to avoid store baby food as much as I can

I second Anna’s comment banana and avocado for our babe and he still loves them to this day

@Shanon hopefully after enough attempts hell come around to bananas. He hasn't been the biggest fan every time we've tried them :/ this morning I gave him a bit to try and bite off himself and he would chew the pieces and spit them right out, and then devoured strawberry oatmeal lol
