Nursery food

My LO is 23 mths and eats all his food at nursery - two hot meals a day. But they hide the kids veg and mash it up which is causing a bit of an eating issue at home. He’s got a great appetite but i want them to give him chunkier food as it’s creating a problem which he didn’t have a year ago with textures!! Is this the norm? Do all toddlers just not like veg? He eats all types of fruit. I’ve raised it but they have said that they have to as some kids dont eat it. Hes in 5 days a week so his eating habits are being shaped my nursery. Will he grow out of it? Should I speak to the manager and not the girls in his room? Surely not a big ask to get the on site chef to not make his meals into sauce!!

Hmm that’s odd, it’s definitely not recommended to try to hide food in other things! Can you just send your own food?

Doubt they will make an exception for one child even if you do ask. My son is 16 months and refuses to eat veggies. Fruit he absolutely loves. Think it’s normal.

My girl eats no veg only fruit it’s a bloody nightmare but I still add to her plate in the hopes she will one day x

My toddler is really funny with textures and he doesnt eat any veg. But supposedly he eats all of his food at school so it may just be how i prepare it. He LOOOOOVES cucumber tho

@Tahirah yes he eats everything at nursery (now I know it’s because it’s mashed up and hidden!!)

@Lauren I don’t think it’s just mine, so worth asking. They are very caring so hopefully they will provide a solution

@GMF no I pay for 2 hot meals a day and I have no time to send him in with sandwiches each day 🤦🏻‍♀️ yes I agree my weaning was great and my LO was exposed to everything - now I feel like he’s being fed a like a baby again!

That’s strange because the nurseries I work in have always ensured it’s not mashed because they need to learn to eat more chunky foods and transition to more and more solids. Hiding it just prevents them from making effort to actually encourage the children. Hiding it just doesn’t help at all with regards to them learning because when they eat it’s a time that the practitioners are supposed to encourage healthy eating and independent eating so I actually think they’re in the wrong for hiding and mushing the veggies. Best of luck 🤞

My son doesn’t go nursery however you would think each kid has a plan tailored to them? So it doesn’t matter if one kid don’t eat one thing because they just change it for that one kid, not all the kids? My son has always had texture issues and is the opposite, he eats all veg but don’t like fruit because of the texture!

@Shay they couldnt possibly feed each child in a different way, some nurseries have 40/50 kids
