Doula - worth it?

I’m thinking of getting one for either pre natal and birth prep, labour and post natal support. Some offer hypno birthing within their pre natal packages also. Has anyone got any experiences or thoughts?

I would love a doula, but I think I would prefer to be on my own with my husband. Not sure about a stranger with us during labour, even if you get to know her before. Also the cost put me off a bit😅 if you find an affordable one, have a first contact with her and see how you feel about her....definitely look at hypnobirthing, there are books and online courses available too

I think hypnobirthing is great - but lots of antenatal courses include that for free as part of their prospectus and there’s a bunch of great books on it. I’m not opposed to the idea of a doula but I do think it’s a big expense for something not really necessary (providing you have a supportive birth partner!). However if it’s a thing you can afford and you’re worried about support or advocating for yourself, then go for it. It certainly won’t hurt!

I think a doula is a great idea, for a first child especially. x

I have been exploring this option as I’m having my first and have some concerns around birth, the level of NHS support available at my local trust and having support postnatally as I’m mindful of my mental health during this time. After meeting a few different people I have found someone that I feel happy working with. I have flip flopped between having someone extra in the room during birth or just having my husband (who is incredibly supportive). The doula has arranged for us to do some birth prep sessions on a pay as you go basis and if I decide I do want her in the room then she’ll deduct what I’ve paid from the total cost. She won’t be taking any other mothers at the same time so my due date period will be ‘reserved’ for me. We can also add postnatal sessions as needed, so she’s being very flexible It is a cost that will be coming out of my maternity savings but given my concerns I’m viewing it as an investment that will help start my motherhood journey with the support I want
