Not understanding why they want to put me on insulin

So I got diagnosed 3 weeks ago and in that time, I’ve been trying to learn my diet- ive got this pretty much nailed now with the odd time where I test if I can have something. I’ve been put on two metformin evening and morning. My readings are mostly good with the odd spike from where I’ve tried something new and it hasn’t worked (I make a note and don’t have this again.) I went for my scan yday and baby has come down from 98th centile to 87th and is healthy; so I know everything is ok and going in the right direction however, because I had two spikes over the weekend… one was because I was stressed so was slightly elevated (7.8 ) and the other was a 9 because I tried granola and yoghurt, they’ve said that if I get one more then I’ll need insulin. I don’t see how when everything else is fine and what I’m doing is working and she’s coming down in size. I feel like they would just be pumping me full of insulin for no valid reason. I’ve felt fine and baby has been very active. Why would you do? I’m 35 weeks.

Honestly I would push back. How are your fasting readings? I'm diet controlled so far and they really don't want me on insulin yet even though I asked a couple times!

7.8 isn’t even high!!? I’ve been told my readings an hour after food should be 7.8 or under. What I would say is you’re only on a low dose of insulin in the beginning if they do put you on it. And from what I’ve been told,you’re right in the middle of the weeks which do become harder to control the numbers. It doesn’t sound to me like you need to be on insulin though! I’ve been on it since 25/26 weeks and I started on 4 and I’m now on 16 - likely going to 18 today. But mine isn’t well controlled. Foods are fine one day then send me high the next 🙄😂

It depends what your timings and readings are. For me I take readings after 2 hours and they need to be under 6.9, just different health systems. But a once off of 7.8 while you're experimenting still wouldn't be concerning for my diabetes team. I was diagnosed at 16 weeks and it took a month to get the hang of the diet!

@Sarah I’ve been told 7.8 is high as they want it to be under. Which is a pain😂

@Emma fasting are all below

Mine has to be taken an hour after eating and has to be between 5.2 and 7.7. I thought it was 7.8 until yday. I really feel like they just want to pump me with insulin at the moment but she’s coming down in centile and is healthy. She’s moving and happy. I just don’t think it’s excessive enough to warrant insulin when it’s obvious the metformin is working. I’ve put comments next to every reading and fully understand why they spiked. Like I say- it’s been trial and error for 3 weeks but I don’t feel like they’ve given me a chance to diet control it.

@Alicia same. Mine have to be under 7.8 Rule of thumb in my trust is 3 high readings, then a chat with the diabetics team. I've had it before where I've explained to them about new food and probably that's why and they've been happy with that. From 2 high readings that seems a bit excessive to suggest insulin, especially if you can explain the highs. That said, there has to be a cut off somewhere x

@Alana that’s what I thought about it being excessive. From the moment I found out though they’ve not even spoken to me about diet controlling it, they put me on metformin straight away. My readings were that far over then either.

Honestly you can say no if you dont think its necessarily, or ask them to review it in another week before you agree xx

@Alicia it must be different depending on your local trust I guess? Our says 7.8 or under.

I was diagnosed with GD at 16 weeks (now 20) and similar to you tried out foods and within 10 days the GD team wanted me on metaformin medication. I pushed back and asked for more time but by 19 weeks they were adamant I needed the medication. I started this but they are already talking about putting me on insulin. Like you it seems a bit drastic and as someone who is also on other medication already as well it feels like one more thing to pump into my body! Also not sure what side effects come with Insulin but the metaformin has been terrible for me can hardly eat almost days as so nauseous!

I'm not saying I agree with it, but I was told they don't mind seeing a few highs in the first week or 2 from experimenting but it should be settled by week 3 and you know what you can and can't eat by then. Maybe just ask for another week for them to review and just stick with the foods you know you can tolerate. Annoying to eat the same foods but it is what it is - not for much longer'
