Weaning

Weaning has been very stressful for me. My boy is 9 months old and is still not eating meals. I’m very stressed about this as we only have 2 months left until nursery. He has hand to mouth coordination but isnt consuming anything. Also he sometimes plays with his food and just drops it on the floor. What can I do to sort this out?

Hi my boy was the exact same. Still doesn’t eat much compared to others his age! But he does great at nursery! They all get it in their own time so as stressful as it is try not to worry, they’ll be fine x

You might find nursery actually helps with this. They learn from the other children and copy them. My little girl started nursery at 7.5 months, so she wasn't eating much but quickly came on leaps and bounds once she was eating around other infants x

I wouldn’t worry mine was 1 and hardly eating anything he just wasn’t bothered, he’s 2.5 now and eats absolutely fine, nursery might help as he’s watching other children xx

Mine was the same, well, she actually got a lot better a week before starting nursery, eating pretty much everything I offered all of a sudden… at 10 months, then started nursery and stopped eating again 😝but within 2 weeks she was eating all meals and snacks at nursery so I’m sure yours will do the same, just takes a while for them to get into the new routine and new surroundings etc x

I can’t remember how old my son was when he started eating his meals properly but 9 months is still early into the food journey and at this age they’re still getting all their nutrients from formula, so food is essentially just for learning and fun. It is normal to play with their food it’s part of the process. I found offering a fruit (his safe food) or yogurt dessert after a meal made me feel better about him not eating his meals. They have to learn to eat just like they learn to do everything else and it can be more challenging for some babies like all milestones but they all get there eventually x
