Solid foods

My baby is turning 8 months on the 7th and I want to start introducing a wider variety of foods and textures. So far, she’s been exclusively breastfed while eating 2 purées a day. (A snack pouch, and dinner with oatmeal cereal). I also want her to learn how to feed herself. What are some of your babies favorite foods and what does their eating schedule look like?

We serve a snack at 10am, 12pm, 3pm, and 6pm. Solid starts is a great app for learning how to serve foods. My girl loves all fruits and eggs, she’s getting better at eating those herself. She’s also great at picking up yogis (they’re also called melts). We just introduced cheerios and surprisingly she was able to pick those up after a couple of days of practice.

@Stephanie thank you! I’ll definitely get the app!

We started with soft foods like little bites of bananas, waffles, crinkle cut French fries. My baby just turned 8 months today and he started eating solids about a week ago. But he eats 4 things of baby food a day and breastfeeds. He’s tall for his age and growing fast so he eats more. I started giving him solids and he handled them really well! We just got him some of those teether wafers and yogurt melts and some of the other 8m+ baby snacks and he’s done great with them. You can try eggs, spaghetti sauce with small bits of hamburger meat, mashed potatoes, pretty much anything that is soft. When it comes to things like French fries or waffles I gave him a full one. Like a full French fry. And he would gum and chew on it until he got little bits off. I feel like that is safer than giving him chunks he could choke on. Of course keep an eye on baby at all times while she is learning to eat! My little guy eats breakfast around 9am, get a snack later on, lunch around 12

Gets some snacks inbetween lunch and dinner, and then gets dinner. I usually give him small bites of whatever we are eating if it is appropriate. Like if I’m eating a banana for breakfast I’ll give him some of it. Or if we have spaghetti for dinner I’ll give him small bites of the sauce and hamburger meat. I did just find that Walmart now has some gerber mealtime for baby purées and they are thicker than regular baby food with small chunks in it to help prepare baby for solids. One I got was turkey and it also has apple, cinnamon, and sweet potatoes in it. My little guy ate it with no issues tonight and was able to eat one (the jars are bigger than the regular sized baby food jars so one was plenty) so you could definitely look and see if you can find some of those for your little to see how well she tolerated thicker food with chunks.

She mainly eats whatever we eat that's soft/age appropriate. The Solid Starts app is great for explaining how to prepare foods. Schedule is roughly: 7am wake/nurse 8:30am breakfast (solids) 9:30am nurse (5oz bottle if at daycare)/nap 10am wake 11am lunch (solids) 12:30pm nurse (5oz bottle if at daycare)/nap 2:30pm wake 3pm snack (solids) 3:15pm nurse (5oz bottle if at daycare) 5pm nap 5:45pm wake/nurse 7pm dinner (solids) 8pm nurse/down for bed
