Postnatal care

Hi ladies, We've just moved to Ayrshire from London and I'm 34 +4 weeks. I'm just wondering what the postnatal care is like with NHS Scotland, what can I expect? In my home country (Netherlands) women receive 8 days at-home care by a midwife assistant, but I doubt such a thing happens here! However, does anyone visit you at home to check baby for example, or do you go to GP or hospital? Apologies if this question is a bit ignorant! Thanks for any help!

Hi! I’m not sure if it varies by region, with both of my children I was visited by midwives every couple of days at home until I think day 10. That is under the greater Glasgow & Clyde health board. Thereafter your care is taken over by a health visitor - how often they visit will depend on how much support you may need x

9 days midwife then health visitor takes over. Weekly visits from them for six weeks then it’s less often

So you have midwife for 10 days and then you switch over to your health visitor who comes out weekly to start then at different set times, they weigh and measure your wee one and check for development and that baby is hitting all their milestones ☺️

I was told 2 weeks or until baby is back to birth weight you’re care for by the midwife’s- they came out on day one, three, five etc roughly but if there was concerns around weight etc they might come daily- you can contact them if you need anything between visits. Then health visitor (I can’t remember how often this was) but again any concerns you can contact them. 6 weeks post birth the baby goes for a check up at the gp- under Glasgow the mum also has a check up but we’re under the highlands and it’s just the baby that gets a check up here so just depends on your health board and the policies they follow x

I'm in Ayrshire, my lo is 1next week, we got the midwife for 10 days after we got home, we were in hospital longer than planned. The midwife won't come out everyday in the 10 days but the checks are for both you and baby, then the health visitor takes over with weekly visits for the first few weeks then it depends on your circumstances how often they see you, you also get a 6 week check at the GP for both you and baby.

As a fellow dutchie living in Scotland (both my children were born here) there is nothing similar to kraamzorg here. You do get a visit from a midwife the first few days / every other day up until about 2 weeks of age. This is a short visit just to check babies weight, how they are doing, check mothers vitals etc. Afterwards the health visitor comes around a few times to measure baby and keep an eye on the mothers mental health as well. My youngest is now 9 weeks old, I think Ive seen the health visitor 3 times so far. My mother came over from the Netherlands to help out after birth twice. We jokingly called her the kraamzorg 😅

Should have 3 visits from Midwife from the day after you get home from hospital up to day 10. Then you'll have a Health Visitor for 11 visits across the year x

Thank you all 🥰 that's actually better than I thought it would be, but London was generally dreadful with anything healthcare. @Juli 😆 mother kraamzorg might be a possibility 😆

I've recently found out - via this app - that Health Visitors in Scotland have more scheduled visits than the rest of the UK. We moved my care from England to Scotland around about week 16 of my pregnancy, and noticed a significant improvement in care x

@Elizabeth , yeah I can definitely see a difference and I've only been here a few weeks.

The first few weeks you'll have a few home visits and phone calls with your community midwives followed by health visitor taking over just to check how you're doing. Meant to have a GP appointment at around 6 weeks most partum for you and baby 🍼 You may have to chase your GP practice for that though - I had to ask practices are really struggling to keep up atm. Otherwise that's about your lot!

Thank you Dairine 😊
