Using cutlery

My little girl is struggling to use her spoon at almost 17 months, nursery made a comment about it and it has me worrying. We use a doodl short block handle fork and spoon and she’s ok with the fork but can’t grasp the spoon I’ve tried all sorts of different ones. Is it normal for babies of this age to not be able to use them

I’m not sure if it’s normal but my baby is hopeless with her spoon. She can say spoon and pretend to use mine when she’s not supposed to but no chance when she’s eating her own food. I blame BLW 🤣

Same, she will hold the spoon and dip it in the bowl, but it's very rare for a bit of food to actually get in her mouth!

It's a 2y skill, so they being over dramatic. I would just keep offering cutlery and practice makes perfect

They are probably just annoyed that they have to guide her. Why don’t they choose to support and teach her to do it at nursery? What exactly do they get paid for if it’s not this? It’s also a milestone for 2. So I’d just email them the information if that was well.

My girl struggled to use baby/toddler cutlery but uses a normal teaspoon really well

Maybe fork but spoon they still too young

Thanks everyone for the reassurance puts my mind at ease being a first time mum, the nursery did say they would support her in learning to use the spoon but also asked me if she always uses a straw cup (that I sent in with her) and not a spouted one? Honestly, it’s a lovely nursery but sometimes I wonder if they are up to date with latest information or guidance in my opinion there isn’t anything wrong in a free flow straw cup or not being confident with a spoon at her age.

I’m glad we are not the only ones! A couple of months ago (at 14months old) one of the nursery staff commented and seemed surprised that he couldn’t use a spoon properly. I felt really embarrassed. So we have been trying really hard. They use metal cutlery at nursery and so we tried that. He much prefers using a metal teaspoon to the toddler weaning cutlery and is much more accurate too!
