Maternity leave EI

Ok little confused here.. I know you need 600hours to get EI but do you need the "best weeks" too which I think is 21 in BC? If so, does that mean if you don't work 21 weeks and make at least $63k, you won't get the max benefits? Because that sicks then...600hours can be less than 21 weeks so then you are being forced to work longer.

I've never heard of that

I’m not 100% sure what you’re asking but 600hrs is 600hrs - That’s the same for everyone. It’s over a 52 week span so they take the total amount of your best 21 weeks from that period to give you your mat/pat EI amount. This is a benefit to you - You wouldn’t want them averaging out pay of weeks you earned less, which would likely be the case if you’re an hourly employee or only worked part of the year. So say, you had four weeks with $0 pay - It isn’t lumped into your average.

@Dani I'm saying not everyone will work 21 weeks or more in the last 52 weeks. So if you only work say 4 months to get your 600hrs that's not 21 weeks so they wouldn't take the pay over those 16 weeks and average it over 21 even tho the last 5 would be 0? Or just use the average of the 16 weeks? Why do they have the 21 week rule then? That's where I'm confused and can't find a clear answer online.

Oh yes, I believe it would be divided by 21, regardless. I guess it really depends on your employment situation. We’re incredibly blessed to have the coverage we have here. I don’t think working 21 weeks is an unreasonable expectation, regardless, considering you’re given the option of 12-18 months of leave.

@Dani so you need to really work 21 weeks and 600hrs...it is unreasonable for someone who doesn't have a job to return to or has to find one or gets pregnant and doesn't meet all the qualifications. It's nothing to do with being blessed. I just asked a generic question to understand better since I can't call service canada today.

Calling the EI line will help clarify things. They are very helpful and will take all the time so that you understand fully. I’m in a complicated situation myself and had a nice 20 minute call with someone. She said Wednesday and Thursday are the “quietest” times so you won’t be on hold as long.
