Truly Solid Foods?!

My ten month old was a late bloomer where solids were involved. His pediatrician told us to start giving him purées at 4 months, but he had a difficult time with the spoon (throwing a fit out of sheer frustration). At 7 months, we tried again, and he was way more receptive. So, I’ve been puréing ever since, slowly adding in rice, oatmeal, flax seed, chia seeds, etc, for texture as he grew older. So LAST NIGHT. I stayed up until around 2am lightly blending each individual component of the guisado con pollo I’d been slow cooking for 8 hours that day. Fast forward to ten minutes ago, he’s apprehensive about his lightly puréed chicken, but begrudging eats it nonetheless. I take the opportunity dig into my plate, and this little milkbag nearly dives into me, reaching towards my unaltered guisado and I thought… okay. He’s supervised. Go ahead. And I broke off a bit of chicken for him. It wasn’t large enough for my little sumo. He wanted more, and I obliged. He’s chewing away, with his 1/4 of a tooth 😩 When did you ladies start giving your little ones whole bits of food? Have I started too late, or has he just now signaled to me that he’s ready?

We started from 6 months as we did baby led weaning from the start :) they have hard gums so defo don’t need teeth for whole foods! It’s not too late for you to start and it’s a great sign he’s wanting to try! As long as the foods are modified correctly to minimise choking risk, you’ll both do great. There’s a facebook page called ‘weaning the blw way’ which is a great resource for this.

he's ready girl! as long as he's got a good idea of how to chew, and the foods are in small enough pieces that he won't choke, then you're fine!

@Yaz Phew! I’ll check out the Facebook page, thank you! ☺️

@Sarah Oh, he’s chewing his heart out, and he looks like a little turtle when he does — why is that so cute 😩💕

They can use their gums! 6 months we started :)

We did purees from 4 to 6 months then started self fed solids from there. Some kids start earlier and some kids start later, but him diving for your food is an unambiguous "I'm ready" in my books lol

We did baby led weaning from the start at 6m - the ‘solid starts’ app (and instagram page) is an amazing resource on how to safely serve all different foods!

My son started eating at 5 months and by 6 months was eating rice, beans, meats, veggies etc.
