Help

My partner and his ex had a child and she’s almost 2yo. For the past couple days her eating habits have changed, she doesn’t chew her food she sucks on it and swallows the big pieces. Me and my partner are at the point where we have to cut food into tiny pieces and monitor her chewing. Is anyone else dealing with it or have dealt with it?

Exactly the same with my baby , we get so scared cause he gags it out but then continues to swallow any big piece 🤦🏻‍♀️ my mom said it’s just a phase but IM TERRIFIED HE’ll choke 😭

@Isabel I didn’t know if I need to talk to her pediatrician, it’s terrifying for me too because I almost had to perform the child Heimlich maneuver on her. Scared me out of my whits.

I can’t even imagine !!!!! I’d go straight to the ER 💔😭 that hasn't happened but to prevent it I bought that choking device and it gives me a little bit of ease but STILL if they tell you it's uncommon please get back to me cause mine said it was just a phase 😭

Maybe try offering SUPER LARGE pieces that she can't fit into her mouth so she's forced to take bites. Model chewing... say "move the food to the side and chew with your big teeth". The demonstrate and very clearly move food in your own mouth and chew slow and clearly with your mouth open. Talk to her about what chewing sounds like. Say "what do you think this cucumber sounds like when you chew it...do you think it's crunchy?" Then demonstrate and say "listen, csn you hear it crunch" then do the same with soft foods and say "do you think this bean is squishy when you chew it?" Hopefully, she will mimic you when you engage her this way.

You're supposed to cut food into bite sized pieces. Small as your first pinky joint. Also demonstrate proper chewing. It's not something they do instinctively. They need to learn proper eating skills.

@Ellie she had been chewing her food very well and using her teeth. She has been eating food since 6.5 months so we weren’t worried about her until she started sucking on her food rather than chewing. We started on soft foods again until we can start seeing her eating habits change again.
