Weight gain

I am so depressed after having an annual check up at the GP. My notes say “severely obese, 19 stone 5”. I am 26 weeks pregnant and have put on about a stone so far this pregnancy. I remember being 15 stone a few years ago and thinking I was huge then. It is so upsetting. I also have hyperemesis so I’ve actually barely eaten this pregnancy, What have peoples experiences been PP re losing weight? Do you actually lose weight if you breast feed? I also have PCOS so really struggle to lose weight anyway. I know weight gain is healthy in pregnancy but I can’t help but feel triggered by what is written in the notes.

I'm not post partum yet myself, but thought I could maybe help? I also have PCOS and noticed pre-pregnancy that I struggled to lose weight a lot.. I'm still doing research on the best exercises because I found when I was going to the gym and weightlifting nothing about my body composition or weight actually changed for the better I only got larger even though a lot of google sources said high intensity training was best.. i stopped going to the gym and went for 45 minute walks every day and had finally lost 5ish lbs in a month but then of course became pregnant so that weight loss stopped and I couldn't handle going for those walks anymore. In terms of diet if you can talk to a dietician or a nutritionist that'd probably be the most helpful because they can make a personalized diet plan. However, on tiktok the account pcos.weight.loss I find is really helpful. Same with thepcosmentor. I will say though I haven't actively participated in their suggestions yet.

I totally understand your feelings and wish I could be of actual help, but if you want to vent and be each other's motivation and support systems PP (I'm currently 23w) I'm here for you and you can reach out at anytime!

@Christina thanks for your reply. I’m unable to eat normally atm due to the hyperemesis, but prior to getting pregnant I did everything “right”. I’ve followed low GI, PCOS friendly diets for years and years - when you explain to people that you actually eat healthily and less calories than your body needs, but still not losing, they just don’t believe you but it’s so true and so disheartening. I am due in January so will be winter but hoping to get out on walks each day with the baby and hopefully this helps. It is so hard with PCOS isn’t it

I was 19'5 about then as well. Gave birth a few weeks ago and lost a whole stone... Have been eating much less and walking.. i seemed to have maintained my weight

I'd follow this up with GP post birth. If you have had struggles losing weight but doing all the right things but no results, there's some amazing medical help (injections) that's been developed and prescribed in recent years. Sometimes we need extra help and it's ok to ask for that.

@Jess I’ve heard about all the weight loss injections, do they actually work?!

I would highly recommend the 1:1 diet - it’s the only diet I’ve ever lost weight on and I’ll definitely be going back to it PP :)

Very much so. They are a great addition alongside a healthy diet and exercise to help those who need that extra bit of help. There can be some side effects of course (my friend had a bit of an upset stomache for a few weeks whilst her body adapted). Just make sure to speak with doctors about it as there are some unregulated suppliers online which sell it for cheap but that's always a risk as to what you're actually getting.

I lost like 5 stone breastfeeding after my daughter! I have put lots of weight back on now and weigh more than you’ve said you are. Try not to focus too much on the severely obese bit. I know it’s horrible to see that though. X

@Kylie wow really? I really hope I can breastfeed, I’ve heard having PCOS can make this difficult. Thank you - I know it’s just a medical term but it’s a slap in the face when you already feel huge coz you’re literally growing another human!

@Georjia thank you I will look into it next year

Yeah i didn’t realise it at the time but you do burn lots of calories! Exactly you are so give yourself a break, it’s not easy work. Its so outdated with the whole bmi thing - they really need to change it xx

Started pregnancy 19st12 and have PCOS. After giving birth my weight was 17st10. I knew id lost weight due to face slimming down abit, but didnt know how much it would be as I weighed 19st5 from about 12wks. I didn't really diet through pregnancy, but did try follow a healthy low carb diet as I was conscious of weight gain Gaining a stone is a good amount. I have friends that gained 3/4stone. and remember baby/fluid/placenta counts for that to! I've put a few pounds back on 10wks on, breastfeeding doesn't seem to have the weight falling off me like I hoped it would, not really focused on it atm though, just enjoying mam life x

@Ruby thanks - has having pcos affected breastfeeding? I keep reading that it is hard for us to produce milk but I really am hoping I can give my baby this

I gained a lot of weight while pregnant! I lost 2 and a half stone the week I had my little boy (he was 8lb 1oz of that and then placenta etc), I have struggled to lose weight since. I did not breast feed as I wasn’t able to. The two girls who had babies at similar times as me and breastfed have lost sooooo much weight and one of them (my cousin) I know eats a lot still so breastfeeding is obv brill for weight loss x

Breastfeeding is going fine! My milk took a few days to come in - but blame being induced and my body not being ready for a baby for that. But after couple day pumping we got there and it's been great since x
