Baby weaning

So my little girl is 7 months old, my mother in law sometimes prepares her little meals but the most recent one she used 1/4 of a stock cube (that was in 1 large carrot, a sweet potato, chicken, sprouts and broccoli I think) I said I’d rather not give her it because of the salt and she got really pissy about it… am I in the wrong? Is that small of an amount going to be okay?

I’ve always used stock cubes in my cooking, 1/4 of a cube is such a tiny amount

@N 💞 but I had read babies kidneys can’t take the salt ?

Honestly it’s such a small amount! Your baby will be fine. Flavour is good for them! Babies are ‘allowed’ 1g of salt a day! I say ‘allowed’ like that as I have never tracked salt or sugar for my kids🤷🏼‍♀️

Is there a 1/4 of a stock cube in your child’s portion that she has eaten or 1/4 in multiple portions? Either way, it’s fine, you can balance out salt over the day/ week, keep things less salty. For reference 100ml of stock using a whole oxo cube has 0.77g of salt and the recommendations are no more than 1g of salt per day for babies so it’s fine.

Recent studies have refuted the suggestion that salt should be avoided for babies. They actually are more likely to have low sodium levels than high. The updated suggestion is to salt their food as usual (I.e. use stock cubes when needed, salt pasta water) but don’t add additional salt when serving. ‘The kidneys of infants aged 6–12 months have adequate sodium excretion capacity. There is insufficient evidence that high salt (sodium) intake early in life might lead to hypertension or salty diet preference in adults. Infants aged 6–12 months might be at risk of low sodium intakeof only 150–300 mg of sodium/day, which may not meet the body's needs, if their supplementary food is not adequately salted.’ https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0929693X23001562#:~:text=5.,food%20is%20not%20adequately%20salted.

I mean it’s not advised to add a ton of salt to your cooking. But there’s already salt in a lot of things that they can have.

You can get zero salt stock cubes made my knorr, that’s what we use 🙂 maybe ask her to use those

@Lisa it was in multiple portions so 1/4 went in the equivalent of 8 large ice cube tray sections if that makes sense

It will be fine as a one off just not on the regular. But her some low or no Salt stock cubes for future
