Gestational Diabetes

I have been diagnosed with Gestational diabetes on 16th September and from then on I am monitoring my glucose levels everyday -fasting and post every meal. For some reason, my post dinner Reading is always high. Tried different foods, exercise but still couldn't bring it in control. My daytime readings are perfectly okay, it's only the night one that's fluctuating so much. Has anyone faced similar problem?? I have also been told that if they are not controlled for the next one week, I might have to make a decision between metformin and insulin. Is anyone currently using them or have already used ?? What would be your preference? -Thanks

I didn’t mind insulin I preferred that over metformin but I had to have both in last pregnancy, now in this pregnancy I’m 10 weeks and I’m already on metformin, what kind of things are you eating? It’s the carbs really that can make them high. If that’s not your issue then it will be a hormone thing and unfortunately there’s not a lot you can do about that, but it’s not your fault either so just remember that 😊..

Have you tried eating more protein. Mine was the same but a midwife said if ate more protein in the evening it may balance it out and it did.

I think a lot can have upset stomaches with metformin

What sort of dinners are you having? A lot of foods have hidden carbs. You might not be eating enough protein to balance the carbs either.

I’m 31 weeks and I choose to have only insulin as the metformin made my stomach very upset

Would be worth checking your food choices again. Yes, adding more protein, salads, fibrous and citrous food makes a whole lot of difference. Is there anything you eat before dinner time that could contribute? Or not eating for too long can also impact, as the body tries to level up by producing glucose if it gets low. Are there any stress triggers during that time? Many things can contribute. I hope you can identify. If nothing works, then there’s nothing wrong to take medication. Take care x

I had hugely high blood sugar levels overnight no matter what I ate - constantly 6.9-8. Sometimes it’s just hormonal and there’s nothing you can do about it. The slow acting overnight insulin changed the game for me, I instantly went from being up 10 times overnight to once! Don’t be scared of it - it just corrects an imbalance and gives you and baby a better quality of life temporarily. I also take metformin with meals but it doesn’t do that much to be honest!

I’m on metformin, slow release insulin and instant insulin. Been taking since about 26 weeks and now 30. Having to really limit carbs and still not under control. Every week my dosage is going up at the minute. I’d say just cut down sugars and carbs as best you can and if they advise meds, go with what they recommend. It’s nothing to be scared of

@Jen Thank you. Tried it today. Increased my protein intake and strangely for the first time, it is reduced and with in the allowable range.

@Kaylee I was just having regular sandwiches, Some naans and Chicken gravy, Soups etc. But looks like I have been lacking knowledge on carbs and today changed my diet - increased my protein intake, thankfully the results are within the range. Will try for next few days and see if it works out.

@Vaishali Tried increasing my protein intake today, the results are within the allowable range. I usually have my evening snack around 5PM which is just a simple fruit and some Nuts. Ideally that shouldn't cause any trouble, so I haven't analysed much. Thank you for the advice

@Sarah So sorry to hear that your dosage is going up. Hope you are still feeling better. Controlling carbs is really tough, I will see till the mid of next and if nothing works out, will start the medication.

@Vinaya so glad it worked for you. Carb is necessary for us too, so cannot cut down too much on it. You may also try switching to whole meal or seeded breads, brown rice etc that are low in GI.

@Vinaya depending on the fruit, some is high in sugar such as grapes etc. I had raspberries the other day which are supposed to be fine but I was barely within range so that’s something to consider too 🥰
