Have I started weaning too soon?

My 6 month (and a week) old still isn’t sitting unsupported, just supported. I didn’t realise how firm this was a rule for starting weaning. So far she has had some puree/mashed food once a day and is absolutely loving it! But have I started to soon?

If you’re giving her mashed food/purres then that’s not baby led weaning which this graphic is about! So it doesn’t really matter how him not sitting x

I was always told that at 6 months old, you are starting to introduce foods as experimentation for textures and tastes, but you are not starting to wean yet by any means. Weaning takes place between 12-18 months.

@Alexandra by weaning she means introducing foods:)

I’ve always heard baby can sit up assisted (like you or a prop behind them) and then unsupported and then in the high chair

@Lydia weaning means to remove formula or breast milk, so maybe you are just talking about introducing solids, but not weaning.

@Alexandra no you’re wrong, that’s not the only meaning. In this context it means introducing food

The word ‘weaning’ seems to be used differently in different countries/regions. It can mean to wean off milk (ceasing it completely) or it can mean the introduction of food. In this case OP means introducing food. Like someone said you’re not actually doing BLW if it’s just purée so I think you’re fine to continue. Maybe hold off on bigger chunks (BLW) until Bub is a little stronger

@Lydia I am not wrong. It seems like we are both right. However, at 6 months, you are not yet replacing milk/nursing with solid foods; you are just introducing food for baby to try while still fully feeding formula/breast milk for their nutritional needs. There should not be much pressure at 6 months for solids at a fast pace. If you are concerned that baby may not be trying certain types of solids at a certain pace, then I would talk to your pediatrician.

I started my daughter on purees before she could support herself sitting up, and she's been absolutely fine. We just used the highchair. I was advised LO should be upright for at least 30 minutes after a feed.

Thanks so much girls okay so purées and mashed is absolutely fine until she’s supporting herself better, panic over 😂😂 and yeah maybe we throw “weaning” around to easily in the UK, as she is very much still having her milk! Won’t be replacing for food until 12+ months :)
