Epidural hole

Wondering if anyone has had their epidural hole heal without the need for an epidural blood patch? If so how long did it take?

I've had two epidurals and never needed a patch.

I had an epidural and I’ve never heard of an epidural hole?

The epidural hole is basically caused when they do the procedure and it goes in too deep causing an internal hole. I had to have mine done twice because the first one wasn’t in correctly 😖

Hi i had this. I had to lie horizontal for 7 days, drink lots of coffee & take paracetemol with coffee in. This was enough to heal mine & it was pretty severe too o was in agony!

@Nicole thanks for this! My hearing also keeps coming and going in one ear. So strange!!

Not that it's too deep, that is a separate issue, just that the hole that was made when the tube sits in didn't close up so you leak the spinal fluid and get a headache with it as it's all connected to the brain and they use your blood to patch it up.

@Reena it’s the not healing properly, that’s why you have a blood patch so I presume it’s the same thing. That’s why the fluid leaks. It can be caused by doing it incorrectly or other reasons.

Yes the pain is awful! I felt like I was going to pass out every time I stood! It can affect your eyes I think too can’t it it’s so strange! Hope you feel better soon xx

@Nicole yes, that's what I said the hole doesn't close ie not healing.

Had epidural done 5 times first time was with my eldest they screwed it up so had to be redone and last month with my youngest they done it 3 times and kept screwing it up so they gave up trying. Ended up barely being able to move for first few weeks. Now starting to improve finally but still sensitive area and back pain is still very present

I had to have it done 3 times as the first 2 weren’t in correctly I’ve never heard of it🤣😬

@Ellie I think it’s quite rare to get that complication! Some people’s hole where it went in just doesn’t heal properly & fluid leaks out of it causing loads of strange symptoms! Xx

@Nicole ohhh okay I was like wait what?!…

Sorry a bit unrelated to the OPs question but I had this and then had to have a blood patch cause it was so awful and not improving- does anyone know if this happens to you once it’s likely to happen again if you have another? X

@Sophie did you feel better once you had the blood patch?? Seriously considering telling them to just do it as the pain killers aren’t touching it right now

Yes I felt so much better by the next day and would say it was definitely worth it for me, it got so bad I could barely stand without the throbbing headache and like I was going to pass out. Also drink full sugar coke if you aren’t already as something to do with the caffeine and sugar helps xx

@Sophie thanks for the advice, really helpful. X

Hope you’re feeling better soon! X

I had the awful headaches and spent about 2 days laying horizontal. Same as the others, I drank lots of coffee and coke and it cleared within 4 days. A midwife told me to drink lots of water which apparently helps it flush out however I'm not too sure how true that is. I made a rule that any visitors had to bring me a takeaway coffee in the 1st week 😂 Hope you're ok, it is such a horrible intense pain on top of everything else we have to deal with!

@Sophie when I had my 2nd I asked this, as I didn’t want anything in my back to stop me getting it again! They said your chances of getting it again is rare, still no higher than anyone who hasn’t had one before. I still opted for other things tho as I didn’t dare risk it!

Are you lying horizontal? that was the only thing that stopped the pain for me, as when you are stood the fluid leaks out!
