Chewing on hands constantly

Hi all, my little boy is 9 weeks old and is chewing has hands all the time since about 5 days ago. I didn’t have a problem with it until today he sucked in so much gas doing it he projectile vomited a biblical amount of milk all over both of us in a disgustingly public setting 😅 he’s very unsettled tonight in his swaddle and we unswaddled him and he straight away shoved his hands in his mouth. That’s all he wants to do bless him. If we leave him unswaddled his arms fly all over the shop and he doesn’t sleep well. He’s always slept great in his swaddle but obviously is unsettled as he can’t get to his hands. He also had his 8 week jabs 2 days ago, so is that why he’s doing this? Anyone else’s LO doing this? Could he be teething this early? I’ve also tried giving him a dummy to help soothe him and he won’t take one, keeps spitting it out

Is this the first time you've tried a dummy, or is refusing it new? Sucking their hands is a normal developmental step at this stage, but mine still lives here dummy too. If you haven't tried a different brand of dummy I would try that, they're not all equal, mine will only take one kind.

@Emmo hey, I just found out that dummies reduce the risk of SIDS. I didn’t need telling twice so went straight out and got a dummy which was the same make as his MAM bottles (combi fed). But he kept spitting it out, so I’m trying a different type tomorrow. I’m trying to figure out why he’s self soothing but if it’s just developmental then that makes me feel better, thank you x

My LO is doing this too - he’s 11 weeks today and has been doing it for the past 1-2 weeks. He’s also combi fed and only has a dummy when he really cannot settle at night. I’ve heard it’s very normal development with this stage and is them figuring out where their hands are and learning how to put things in their mouth. Really wouldn’t worry mama, you’re doing a great job. If you are really worried, get a GPs opinion to put your mind at rest 🤍

Mine is 8 weeks and has starting really sucking her hands this week. She loves them!! I think maybe it's a developmental thing? X

Same as my 2 month old girl . I thought because they hungry or just developing

Sucking hands is a normal part of development, babies learn through exploring with theirs mouths before long your baby will start putting objects in their mouth. Its is also an important part of developing self soothing strategies which will support them to become more independent in the coming weeks. X

My LG also uses Mam bottles but doesn't like mam dummies 🤷‍♀️ we use Bibs dummies, cherry shaped dummies seem to stay in best.

Tapping the dummy once it’s in their mouths can help them to take it if you haven’t tried that already

Thanks everyone so much!

Sucking of the hands is learning to self soothe but they can't start teething very young, my boy started teething at 5 weeks x
