When your baby hit 6months how did you introduce solids without them choking. My baby is 5 1/2 months, can sit up and shows interest in what I’m eating. Still waiting for Peds approval to dive into solids but have let him taste test some things. I tried potatoes (mashed but not super smooth). He seemed to liked it but gagged once. Now I’m shocked bc does he not know to swallow yet? When do they develop the ability to swallow solids???

You need to start with thinned baby cereal first bc keep in mind babies are going from milk to something thicker. My baby didn’t like cereal too much so I started with fruit that had high water content. I put melon in a fruit feeder and used that, tried also pear puree. Chicken broth too.

My baby started solids around 4-months old. Fruit and vegetable purses (not blends, just single fruit or single veggie) and rice cereal. She does well with both. I’m thinking your baby probably couldn’t handle the potatoes that weren’t smooth yet, that’s why they gagged? Also my pediatrician said no meats until 6-months.

*purées not purses ;)

I’d start with thinned out purées. Like avocado, sweet potato, carrots, green beans, etc. All super thinned- you can use breast milk or formula to thin. Also start with single foods and don’t introduce a new food for a few days after another to watch for allergic reactions.

our pediatrician recommended 'solid starts' so we've been using that somewhat as a guide (there's an app, website, and insta)
