I’m an active Dark Romance/ Smutt reader. My daughter is starting to show and interest books (her child friendly picture books of course) and I’m just thinking down the road. What age do you think is appropriate for a child to start reading these types of books? I start reading these types of book (on wattpad) at the age of 13, I felt I was mature enough for it after I had the birds and bees talk with my parents and got the puberty talk too.

I would say maybe 17-18 because while you can have talks with your child about sex etc it's still easy for them to get confused... I wouldn't want my child thinking that's what love or sex should look like now no shame to you or anyone who likes SMUT books I'm just saying it's different when your an adult and your reading it for your enjoyments etc because we know real life relationships aren't like that versus a young hormonal teen who will probably take that stuff to heart and try to replicate it etc

There are different levels of romance. Try middle school ones like dear dumb diaries or something and slowly work up

i agree with @Jasmine. 13 is way too young in my opinion…

@Mia I was a sneaky child at 13, very sheltered and I don’t plan on giving my daughter access to my library at 13 but I do know that one day she will ask to read my books and I want others opinions on an appropriate age. Should I wait till she’s 17 or college age?

@Lizzie I did really like the dear dumb diaries. I plan to start her off with one of my favorite young teen appropriate chapter books called “Swimming at night” by Lucy Clark. If you haven’t heard of it it’s a murder mystery about sisters. It was the first physical book I got and it’s what made me fall in love with reading

I think probably 18+ but I know the times have changed and people are more aware of such things earlier on but I would want to let my kid be a kid for as long as possible but you can definitely feel it out. Some girls I think would read it and it could influence them to be a certain way too early but you will have to see what she is like. But yeah I mean 17 is basically 18 so either of those ages. I would say definitely high school!

Ouuu that sound thrilling! Once she grows out of fear dumb diaries you can get her into Sarah dessen. She’s more of the 14-16 age range for a romance fic. I was so into those lol
