For those with GD in USA, if diet and exercise don't work, is metformin an option or do you have to do insulin injections each day and how many times each day?

Diet and exercise have worked well for me until recently - I worry they will ask me to do insulin injections my next appointment.

My ob didn’t recommend metformin because I wasn’t taking it prior to getting pregnant. I’m injecting insulin. It’s honestly not bad, less painful than checking blood sugar. I promise, it’s the initial mental block at first but you just have to get past it. I cried the first few days but now it’s just part of my routine.

@Giselle thanks so much for sharing!! How many times do you have to do it each day if you don't mind me asking? Even the pricking and cgm installation give me embarrassingly huge emotional distress each time despite my best effort, so this insulin situation is my biggest pre-labor/induction nightmare

I check my sugars in the morning as soon as I wake up and 1hr after each full meal not snacks. I inject insulin once right before bed. At the beginning it used to take me up to 10 mins to check my sugars because of the mental block. Now I just go through the motions. The first few times I injected insulin it took me at least 15 mins to get through the mental block of injecting myself. I just kept telling myself that it was for my baby and that I could do hard things for 5 mins.

I took metformin and changed my diet and it worked - I ended up needing to make sure to eat directly before bed and play around with when I took my evening dose because of high fasting levels but you can do metformin instead of insulin!

@Jill thank you! I hope I'll have that option. Were you already taking metformin before having GD?
