I am 20 weeks pregnant and my physio said she can't do it in pregnancy. I have lots of stress and my shoulders and neck muscles so so tense , is really a struggle for me....I had this problem for more then 15 years....anyone had acupuncture in pregnancy ? I know one of my friend had it while pregnant, I will also ask my obstetric doctor...I really hope I can have it and it will be helpful

Yes of course you can. Your practitioner may not feel comfortable working on a pregnant woman, but acupuncture during pregnancy is very helpful. See an actual acupuncturist.

Just like Caitlin said, acupuncture is both safe and really helpful during pregnancy. Your therapist likely isn’t trained in doing it safely during pregnancy.

I actually get free accupuncture through NHS maternity services so it's definitely possible!

Thank you everyone who commented ! I been referred before pregnancy and she was going to do an acupuncture after I tried some exercises, but as I said I have this problems for nearly 20 years tension be so bad that my head wants to shake :(( when I told to physio I am pregnant straight away she checked their policy and said she can't do it in pregnancy :(

@Jess did you ask for a referral from your doctor ?

I think massage is way more effective for what you are feeling. Pregnancy massages are amazing!

Maybe cupping is a good option... just not sure if it matters if you're pregnant or not. Cupping helped me a lot with tense muscles

I was just told about it through my midwifery team and was then able to self refer

It depends what the issue is and the type of accupucture. Typical Chinese accupucture is fine but I was seeing an osteopath who did a different kind of accupucture and the needles would go in really far and she wasn't able to place them in certain areas as it can cause early labour. I have a bad back and it was one of the areas she couldn't treat

I know everyone is suggesting allll the things, so my suggestion is a good chiropractor. Especially if you're able to get in for all of the above, PT, Chiro, Massage and Acupuncture.. that would be a dream!

Not sure where you are or what coverage you might have but I’d recommend researching an osteo although definitions in Canada vs US differ I believe. An experienced one can change your life and they would know how to manage a pregnant patient. My round ligament was out of place early in my pregnancy and it was pulling on the fascia in my abdomen and up into my chest. Turns out that was leading to some shoulder and arm pain I was experiencing. The body does strange things!

I had treatment from a very experienced osteopath during pregnancy which really helped me with pain around my pelvis. She decided not to click things into place like she has in the past and instead did lots of gentle manipulation of the area that sorted things out in about 3 sessions.
