Advice on how to teach LO to feed himself purées/stews/anything that isn’t solid

Hey mamas! Seeking recommendations on how to teach my LO how to eat a liquidy food without destroying it all over his high chair and our floor. For reference, he loves eating with his own hands so any dry food is a big win, but I’m of Indian origin and want to feed him all the lentils & gravies that I grew up eating (not purées but just daal & yogurt and the likes). I try to feed him with a spoon but he won’t let me and wants to take the spoon from me. So I try to load the spoon and keep for him to pick up but 9/10 times it ends up on the floor. Wondering if any of you have any tips to share on how to teach him to feed himself such foods? Any particular spoons/plates/bowls you recommend which help in the process? Thanks in advance!

Since you're of Indian origin (correct me if I'm wrong, this is just what I've been told about Indian food), is it common to use breads and other solid foods to dip in gravies? Could you give him pieces of naan bread or similar to dip and taste?

you can offer baby two spoons to hold both at the same time , under our highchair we have a large plastic office chair mat to protect the rug so that helps to contain some messes but i definitely encourage you to allow them to make the mess although it’s irritating lol. maybe try feeding messy stuff outside or an area that’s easy to spot splashes and can be wiped down. you can also try not giving any spoons until they’re older (not sure your babies age) also deeper spoons are easier to scoop liquids. best one i’ve found is an OXO portable one

I always made dal a bit thicker and overcooked, and mashed it a bit (not grinded as it looses all its texture and it’s always better to offer babies different textures). Also chose Greek yogurt as it’s thicker than homemade dahi. (Plus more protein) For older babies; 9-10m+ you can buy reusable pouches and fill it with dal/dahi or curry of your choice and model to try it that way. Also have you tried different kids of spoons? Like the ones below and let him feed himself. Buy extras. https://www.target.com/p/nuby-baby-first-spoons-3ct/-/A-89488145?sidd=&ref=tgt_adv_xsp&AFID=google&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000012510679&CPNG=PLA_Baby%2BShopping%7CBaby_Ecomm_Baby&adgroup=Infant+Basics/Furniture&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=m&location=9032007&targetid=pla-1731815646875&ds_rl=1242884&ds_rl=1246978&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD-5dfaxBLrLHrrHbw657Y1ViE_wF&gclid=Cj0KCQjwo8S3BhDeARIsAFRmkON7jPjApLVyPfJjNo_301xitSamZXd9uA6XFvd_fedxu8UQ65FSwd0aArMEEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

@Reva oh the pouches are a good idea! I’ll try that as soon as he turns 9 months in a few days now. I do have the same spoons but he holds them upside down and there goes the food lol

@Andrea oxo spoon looks great! I’ll buy em and see if they work

@Melissa yes that is right, it’s definitely a way to make sure he eats something though I do want him to get used to the consistency of the actual gravies. Maybe on desperate days I’ll do that :)

@Mudita Khurana yeah! Give him spoons in each hand and dip both sides of each spoon so something gets into his tummy!
