Baby is starting nursery 2nd week Dec so I know funding will only begin in Jan.

I had the exact same problem and called HMRC and they said you have to apply 31 days before you got back to work so you should be ok in October x
It's to stop you putting money in too early and claiming the tax free top up before you have started back.

You have to be returning within 31 days of submitting your application
